minor things that make you fume

Had me car serviced at a local garage. A franchise one.
They said it would need £650-£750 of work done to get it through it's MOT.
Knew this must have been bollocks, so took it to me old garage and it's gone through for £150 including the test fee.

Absolute racket some of these garages and I bet loads of people just pay for everything they say needs doing.

Public bus - early early morning - everyone is sleeping/dozing. Older guy gets on with his headphones turned up so loud you can hear the news channel he's listening to word for word.... he was two rows away from me - no sleep.

Something similar happened to me mate took mine to a garage not far from Goodison when went in the office the fella say my brake drums and pads needed replacing £250plus mot fee.So I took it to another garage it cost £65 to pass the mot no mention of drums or pads, so I ask him about them he said they were fine.

Just had a big garage bill but it's mainly the price of parts (which I knew were needed) that was the bulk of it. I've had two MOT's there and they've never tried it on - passed with advisories both times. Coincidentally it's a local independent and not a franchise. I used to do a YTS in a chain garage and they were murder for fleecing people to push up their bonuses.

It's the same franchise thing that means our current dog is gonna be our last dog. Our once very reasonably priced and excellent vets is now part of a franchise with new staff and absolutely huge bills. Every other vets round here has seemingly gone the same way. They're asking about whether she's insured before even asking about any symptoms.

All their receptions and waiting rooms have been inundated with big adverts and glossy leaflets about pet insurance and financial schemes but not that much about....pets!

We used to use a boss local garage and then we moved house.
They had ample opportunity to mug us off, but were superb.
A proper family run firm with the boss's wife running reception.
I swear she knew more about cars and bikes than most mechanics at these franchise places.
We're also in the same boat with regards to the dogs.
We had a cracking local vet and the move meant we now use pets at home, which hasn't been the best experience so far and as you say, all on the insurance.

I’m fortunate that we’ve had the same mechanic for years and unless the problem causes the car to be unsafe I’ll happily do the 4 hour drive back to my parents for him to work on it.

He rang me up midway through my last MOT to tell me my tyres had about 2k miles on and he said they’d pass but I said change them anyway as I knew he wouldn’t lie and couldn’t be bothered coming back in 2 months. You can’t put a price on honesty.

He recently expanded too which was great to see.

Some garages in London charge over £60 an hour for labour alone. Scandalous.

If you can find somewhere charging less than £50 p/h for labour then you're doing well by all accounts. London or anywhere else.

And the averages tend to be higher for franchise garages....who often pay their mechanics a rather low hourly rate by industry standards.

Lewis Capaldi.
Every morning at the same time give or take five minutes, his latest dirge is played on the local radio over the speakers in the gym. I understand local radio don't have the budget to play a whole array of records, but they've flogged this one to death and now I can't stand him or his music.

I do not believe I have ever heard a record by this guy... Or Adele... Or that song from Frozen everybody was banging on about a few years back.
