minor things that make you fume

I'm amazed at the knowledge retention of a great number of store assistants these days.
Recently whenever I'm in a store and can't find my particular size, I'll ask one of the assistants can they check if they have anymore in the back stock rooms.
The almost universal reply is "sorry, we've got no more of these, all that we have is on the shop floor already"
Somehow I've got my doubts.

It's a good few years ago but I used to work in Woolworths and after a while you did build up a knowledge of what was in the stockroom - and that was a very big stockroom. I remember one woman getting very peeved when she asked whether there was a copy of a certain console game in stock and I said no without checking. I was really into console gaming at the time and I knew for certain that particular game was out of stock but she wouldn't have it.

I'd imagine that these days with automated inventory, the price of retail space and what-not there's very little stock hanging around out back waiting to go on display. Certainly with automatic inventory I'd bet many places have systems in place to move stock from the stockroom to the shop floor as soon as one size or variant gets down to the last few on display rather than wait till there's none out - potential lost sales doing that.

If something runs out on the shop floor then it's probably out of stock. Shops want to sell stuff, not store it.
