MLB 2023

I wonder what Boras has in mind for Alonso now?

Pete could easily move across to the Yankees to fill their 1st base vacancy.

I think Pete stays and gets 5/125.

The mets should keep him, it's a huge, huge gamble to not go for him based on one bad year.

If he hits 40hrs next year, you'd be sick.

Think the media will try to drag out a mini Mets rivalry here, but i think the Mets will make one last "big" move and bring Pete back.

I also fancy Winker to return and I think it'll just be more random signings like Montas to round it off.

I would he trying to get Stanek back for the pen though.

Absolutely want Pete to stay and I’d be more than happy if Stanek came back.

If we resign Pete, the top of the order is ridiculous.

Think that’s about right for Pete. Some helluva scary lineup if he comes back.

Have a feeling they’ll either bring Manaea back or bring in someone like Buehler on short contract.

Still think there’s a real need for some left-handed relievers. It was an issue all season once Raley was injured. Really need one to face the likes of Ohtani, Freeman, Harper, Olson, Merrill, and Carroll

Well, it's very apparent that SteveCo does not like being disrespected and it certainly feels like he's not taken well to previous years of that.

Well documented that he was unhappy they changed the rules for him, yet the Dodgers bent the rules for Ohtani.

I don't think he rests until he gets the ring. The mets fans i know seem to want every player available.

But, it'll be smart and astute pickups after Pete ala Taylor and Winker.

The way the market has played out; I don't think they'll get Manaea.

The market seems V high for arms this off-season. I actually think Dodgers overpaid for Snell, just like we have and the As have for Montas and Severino.

I think Manaea could be looking at north of $20m and whereas I think Pete is worth it, because he's had one down year, there's no guarantee Manaea can produce that well for multi-years.

Buehler seems more realistic right now for me.

But as I mentioned in my last post, some of the guys who performed best last season were the Winkers, Taylor, Martinez's... well at least proved to be key bodies... fully trust Stearns to be working on some good pieces.

How can any team afford to pay three quarters of a billion to one player? I know it's over 15 years but that's $50m a year and they've got all the others to pay too! Also, the bloke will be 40 odd by the end of that contract!

Age isn't necessarily the biggest barer in Baseball - whilst it obviously matters, it's not uncommon for players to play into their 40s. But there will also be "opt-outs", meaning the Mets can basically find a way round paying the remainder of a contract.

162 games a year, which works out roughly $320k per game, which is far less than the average an Elite footballer would get.

You also get 81-home games, and the owner is a multi-billionaire, who has zero core for what he spends. So franchises who are willing to spend money, are allowed to spend up to something like $235m a year on salaries, and there's only a "Tax" on anything which goes over, which some do.

Thoughts on the stats nerds and future of baseball/baseball stats?

On the whole, nerding out on stats is a feature of baseball. Along with lazy summer days at the ballpark and cold brews and hotdogs, this is something that fortunately you can't divorce from the game. And that's good.

But it's not all good and it gets really grainy when people discuss who's HOF worthy, whether relief pitchers have any value, and how to manage late game (and sometimes early game) situations, to that point that my brain leaks out of my ears. I've followed and tried to learn a lot form the stat savants on social media but could never get Tom Tango to explain why he was using mean vs median for one of his stats and then @billjamesonline (who is a godfather of stats despite his ridiculous and out of touch twitter handle) blocked me when I called him out for some nonsense (and maybe I was out of line, but it was utter nonsense).

Anyway, since it's the long winter and there's nothing to watch or hear in the background, what are your thoughts on the stats nerds?
(and if you've got no thoughts, maybe show your geeky original box of Statis Pro Baseball, I know some of you exist out there...)

AND if this is complete nonsense and waste of your time, any reason to pay attention to graded and rare baseball cards or is that a game beyond the nostalgia and not worth any effort?
