Ernie Banks, Hopeful Mr. Cub, Dies at 83; His Mantra Was ‘Let’s Play 2’

A great player and a dear, dear man. He lived a long, rich, happy life by most accounts and we'll miss him. Sorry he won't be here to see this crew this year. MLB should have every team play a double header to honor him one day - too bad he was born in January so they don't have a birthday to do it on. He was possibly the most universally well-liked man in the game, and made Roberto Martinez sound like one of the biggest pessimists in history by comparison.

"It's a good day for baseball. LET'S PLAY TWO." - Ernie Banks

RIP, Mr. Cub. Getting misty here. You broke the news to me, SN. Just up in the middle of the night, here...

Not a Padres fan myself, but the Mrs Nigh's family is largely Padres fans. Surprised by what they've done so far, adding Kemp, Upton, Myers, Norris, and Shields to their roster. NL West might be a very tough race this go around.

This Daniel Norris kid lives some life. Received a $2 million signing bonus when he was drafted but he spends his offseasons by himself traveling in an old school van around the United States only stopping to hike, camp out and surf. He also happens to be one of the top prospects in baseball and will likely make the big club out of spring training.

Hello Americans

Are the games that are going now like pre season friendlies?

I keep getting alerts that my Mets team are playing ..... And mainly losing!

Cool thanks.

I've only been keeping a really vague eye on the scores but looks like they are losing every bloody day!

They are 3-6, but I wouldn't put much into it. Spring Training...especially at this point...is practically meaningless.

There are a bunch of players that are playing that won't be on the Major League roster. Pitchers are only going maybe 3 innings at this point.

The teams even have split squad games where half the players play one team and the other half play another. In about two weeks you'll begin to see the starters playing more, and it the pitchers working a more normal load. If they are losing everyday at that point, it could be cause for concern...but even them I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Ah ok. So a bit like when Everton play a load of youngsters that we never see again in pre season friendlies?

I did see that Matt Harvey played the other day. He's the great hope understand?

Yes a lot like that. Gives the club the opportunity to evaluate personnel...veterans and youngsters alike. Baseball really is an incredible examination when you think about it. 162 game regular season preceded by a 30+ 'friendlies'.

Regarding Matt Harvey...I'd love to see him return to his 2013 form. He looked a real talent...you never know with Tommy John surgery. In today's world though, more often than not they return to as good or nearly as good as before.
