Do you think the Cubs players may try too hard to slug their way to victory with glorious home runs rather than go for lots of base hits and run the players in? Harder to get HRs as the quality of pitchers goes up?

They want lots of base hits and walks to be driven in by homeruns. This does not preclude being aggressive on the basepaths. One of the best parts of Kris Bryant's game is his ability to get from first to third, and to win the race to home plate if he has to do it. This team scores lots of runs.

They just hit lots of homers because they look for guys that hit lots of homers. This is quite a bunch of talented young ballplayers they've rounded up. Soler is just starting to figure it out. Bar injury, this development will be something to watch. Mind you, I remember that I felt the same way when Kerry Wood and Mark Prior were mowing them down in 2003 before their arms fell off, but we never had young position players like this in depth here.

Not ever, in my memory. It was always a mix, and there was never depth. Coughlin, LaStella, Denorfia - these are bench guys that would have started on most, heck, all of the Cubs teams I remember - bringing them in off the bench is pure luxury in Cubbiedom.

And then, there's Schwarber. He's just exceeded any expectation anyone had of him at this point in his career.

Here's why it will be different this year, win or lose. This is not seen as a fluke - in fact it showed up early. My read is that the level of neurotic Cubs fan neediness may be turned down a notch, due to less "now or never" mentality. There's a lot less curse talk, I'll tell you that.

Ok great. Yep in 2003 I was certain the pitchers would be good enough but then the batters just did not come through. Iirc they all fell apart a bit against the Marlins. Maddon did not seem too gutted last night. I guess he hopes for a split to take back to Chicago and does not mind if it comes from 1 game up or one game down. Come on Jake!!!! And the batters of course!!

Question for the Cubs fans: any idea on why Arrieta didn't pitch last night. He would have been on full rest and then been able to go in game 5 and possibly in relief in a game 7.

It was time for Lester to start and let us see what we would get. He was on eight days rest, and he needed to pitch.

If we need Arrieta in game seven in relief, we maybe shouldn't get there. The guys we've picked up have done their job more or less - I credit Theo's busting those stats with his wonk team to dig those guys out and give us a committee that can get the game closed. Maddon has been masterful playing that this year. Plus, if Arrieta has to go in the seventh game, he'll go regardless of how much rest he has. I think you'll see more one guy/two guy relief jobs in this climate in late innings.

If we had the Mets staff, we wouldn't need ours. You guys are lousy with arms. Don't be surprised to see deals done in the winter.

Well then.

Noah plays a gem and all of a sudden the mets go 2-0

If the Cubs want to win This series, they're going to have to beat deGrom, Harvey and syndergaard again.

This is bordering on excitement for me. I'm trying to be level headed but how can you be? Thumped 7 times by the Cubs in regular season, we have 2 game lead for our road games, if Cubs want to win, they have to win in New York. This could be epic series. I hope not. 4-0 will do me.

Should be interesting tonight at Wrigley. With the higher temperature and friendly confines, one would expect some more power from the Cubs. Hoping de Grom can bring the heat

Kind of glad I'm tied down with a rehearsal tonight - set the DVR and watch it after the fact. Hope the W is flying tonight.

Great stuff with the baseball pic at Goodison, ijjy.
