I received an infraction due to "inappropriate language" by a moderator who goes by the name "Groucho".

Original message:

Dear Jxg,

F*cking hell Howard just send it if you have no other options...

All the best,
GrandOldTeam

I attempted to dispute the incident, but received a seven-day ban for doing so. I said (and I still stand by the fact that) nothing I said was illegal or offensive (unless, for some religious reason, you find "hell" offensive, in which case I sincerely apologise). I did not directly or indirectly insult anyone and I did not use any bad language at all.

I was prepared to accept this as harsh moderation and move on. All people interpret things differently and, who knows, maybe the moderator was having a bad day. However, I came across this thread:
http://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/64854-ALAN-MYERS

In here, a message not dissimilar to my "offensive" one was posted. An image of the incident can be found here:

Right underneath, a moderator has posted. Not only that, but it is a direct reply to the post. The "word" that I'm assuming I was banned for posting is repeated in the post and, via a reply, clearly its use is accepted by this moderator.

I'm not aiming to have this other person receive an infraction too, but rather, for there to be a fair standard of moderation across the forum. I used to use the Blueroom a lot. Poor and controversial moderation is what killed that forum and I wouldn't want it to happen here.

theres nothing wrong with questioning authority, if its not done in an aggressive, offensive manner, then the result can be more information on the subject for all

Maybe.

But it's their website. If they say no swearing then no swearing it is.

If you had your own website you could allow swearing.

The post which you are using as an example of a similar post is quoting another person from twitter, it'd seem a bit unfair to give a member an infraction for explaining to everyone else what had happened IMO, ultimately it's up to the moderators though.

As I'm the other mod in question here, I'm quite happy to discuss this with you in private if you'd like to ping me a message. Rest assured though, this isn't some kind of conspiracy, just a bunch of blokes trying to do what's best for the site.

On the questioning side of things, without wishing to speak for the other mods, I like to think we're all pretty transparent about how we do things, and would be quite happy to talk over any decisions in private should anyone want.

Having said that, as Dan highlighted, this place is incredibly active, and there's only 7 of us, so if a particular member does take up an undue amount of our attention then it's not likely to end well for them. We're only volunteers after all, and time is finite.

have a look at bruce's response above, thats all you can ask for, an exchange of thoughts and information, so both parties leave more informed, there wouldn't be a site without the hits provided by members, nothingg wrong with people having a voice, if its done in the correct manner

Again maybe.

Or just read the rules and abide by them.

would it be possible to open a forum and then just leave it to the lids, totally unmoderated etc, unassociated with here?

it'd at least keep the idiots out of here to a better degree than at present.

a kind of 'Animal Farm' of the forum world.

or maybe instigate a probationary period whereby fools, trolls, kopites etc can be launched from the Pier Head towards Prenton.

Be an interesting experiament, it would either become like animal farm, and end up being moderated in the same fashion as the regime it left, or much more likely be like a youtube comments section

I thought this had been tried already?

Just an FYI - I got an infraction the other day for using a swear word even though I (very deliberately) removed a letter from it to get around the censor. Obviously, as I've now found out, this is still a no go, as is abbreviating words I would imagine!

Jxg, I got a red card 10 pointer too lately, it's all completely above board and fair.

Groucho and all the other mods do their best, often in their own spare time, to moderate this very busy place. If posts aren't spotted, then some cases of swearing will be missed. There's no favoritism or wilful inconsistency. Posting about your grievance here will only antagonise the situation.

All the mods and admin are friendly open lads who welcome discussing this type of thing per PM. Next time if you're not sure why you got an infraction just ask them, be polite and respectful and you'll get the same vibe back.

Best to just not swear in posts from now on, we agree on the rules of Grand Old Team when we post here, so no reason we should break them.

Onwards and upwards, mate...enjoy the site!
