wow. we did well to recuperate 32m for him.

one of the strangest signings in our history.
I don't know about that. He was about as sought after as a player can be on the open market at age 19, and for cause. I have a hard time seeing why a club and a player in those respective positions wouldn't take the flier. He needed playing time at a top-flight club, and we needed someone that could step up if DCL didn't (unexpectedly) make the leap.

He didn't take well to the city and fell out with Silva (again for cause). Silva's replacement in Ancelotti was very much not the sort to put up with unprofessional nonsense. That relationship always ends in a quick divorce.

One hopes that the acceleration in the timing of direct funding means that we can conclude a key signing or two this window. Done right, that keeps us up and puts us in a much better position to convert on the inevitable sale of DCL's rights. Kean's lost season is unfortunate for all parties concerned, but sometimes that happens with a talented teenager.

If the sum total of the negatives in the deal ends up being that he lost a season of development and we lost a prospective starter's wages for a season, I would count that a very inexpensive lesson for all parties. I will neither feel bad about the result nor blame Brands for the signing. Sometimes, you play the poker hand correctly and take a bad beat. By any reasonable standard, in context this was how a club at our level at the time should bounce the dice. Judging Brands and the club solely on the basis of the outcome is incorrect.

To put that one another way, if you want to pillory Brands and Moshiri then there are plenty of better ways to do that.
