Early Human League is good, real stripped down industrial sound.

ABBA... close thread it's over.. the only band I'll actively turn off if they came on the radio, and lots of people love them I don't get it.

For a mainstream pop band, some of their ballads are very well written and incredibly easy to listen to - an example being 'The Winner Takes It All'.

Oasis are a decent pub rock outfit but never heard anyone rate them highly tbh. Radiohead are massively more overrated as they're clearly good, but held up as a transformative force in music when they're nowhere close to that tier.

REM are hugely overrated if you go back and listen to their albums (no one does this). They're obv good - who doesn't like a best of REM now and again, but have a very inflated status in the US. I think it was slim pickings there for that sort of college radio music in the 80s and they were one of the few decent bands around that didn't fit into an obvious genre.

I can't have the REM shout. I think their first 6 records are great. Even the 7th after they sold out was decent until Shiney Happy People happened.

Never really consider the hype over anyone, I've always preferred bands in their early days, I would pride myself on knowing about them before they got big, a trawl through back catalogues would support this, but again it's subjective.
Look at U2 up until the Unforgettable Fire, Simple Minds after Once upon a Time, Bunnymen after Porcupine, they all disappeared up their own arses and promoted and believed the 'rating'.
I can look at Artists sometimes and just don't get it, Adele for example, but equally look at artists who I think are cool, like Stormzy, but I'd never buy their stuff.
Having said all that, Ed Sheeran is shyte
