I'm a Cumbrian native (waits...) and the area you're thinking of moving to is referred to as the Wild West. They really are a breed apart - feuds, fights, inbreeding, impenetrable dialect, distrust of outsiders. You'll love it.
The only real employment is at Sellafield. Don't say a word against nuclear power or you'll regret it.
There was a dolphin that ended up in Maryport Harbour a few summers ago. The locals spent their days hurling full beer cans at it. Police stopped youths with air rifles taking potshots at it.

It rains a lot hence the lush vegetation.
Grange-over-Sands is nice.

The Missus and I are toying with the idea of leaving the dark dismal city of Birmingham and moving up to Cumbria.

Are there any posters on here, that live that way and have a bit of inside knowledge.
Looking at the Whitehaven, Workington areas , but fairly flexible.
Obviously finding work will be an issue , so will need to get that in place before anything else.

So yeah , any info or advice would be gratefully received.

Just steer clear of Barrow.

Daughter goes back down to work in BAE systems for a 12 week placement from Uni in a couple of weeks. She was down last year too, liked work, but hated Barrow so staying in Ulverston this time.

Went to Maryport and stayed for 1/2 an hour. That was enough. Silloth, the land that time forgot wasn't much better.

Barrow is ok for a run ashore @Sarnia Kevin but an absolute dive to live/stay in, I spent a couple of months there whilst working at the shipyard a few years ago, it's a couple of months I'll never get back or get over.

Many years ago, I dated a girl from Barrow, who was student in Liverpool.

She had some weird stuff going on in the bedroom, which frightened the life out of me.

And no, I won`t elaborate before you ask, as I`m still scarred ( literally ) by the experience.

Nope, that lunatic was from Hampstead and is now a leading Barrister for the Trade Unions, based in London.

If I`d stayed with her, I`d have been a kept man, but probably kept in a cage lol
