Moving to Cumbria

Not open for further replies.
The Missus and I are toying with the idea of leaving the dark dismal city of Birmingham and moving up to Cumbria.

Are there any posters on here, that live that way and have a bit of inside knowledge.
Looking at the Whitehaven, Workington areas , but fairly flexible.
Obviously finding work will be an issue , so will need to get that in place before anything else.

So yeah , any info or advice would be gratefully received.

(Expects various sarcastic replies)
My aunt moved from Liverpool to Whitehaven over 30 years ago.

She loves it.

Everyone walks around with a glow. Must be the uranium. The marathon green to Cumbria easy call to make. Mainly rover workers at marathon green from memory. Great scenery in Cumbria and the dogging scene is quite good? #coyb

THE DAUGHTER of the Maryport woman convicted of incest with her 18-year-old son has spoken out in a national magazine.

Carla Moran, 23, of Birmingham, told last week’s Take a Break magazine of the fascination that Maryport’s Sylvia Payne had for her son, Craig, when the couple met after 15 years of separation.

And once she had met Craig, Mrs Moran said, she lost all interest in Carla, her grandchildren and the other two children of her first family.

Mrs Moran could have been paid up to £500 for the interview with the magazine.

Mrs Moran said Mrs Payne walked out on the family when she, Carla, was five years old and Mark only three.

Mrs Moran, as the oldest, was responsible for helping bring up the family, which included another sister and brother.

After 15 years, Mrs Payne got in touch and Mrs Moran, with her partner Mark and their two children, travelled to Maryport from their home in Birmingham to meet up.

It was an emotional reunion, she said, and she was eager to get the rest of the family back with their mother.

On the next visit she took Craig and her mother was fascinated by the changes in the 18-year old, whom she had last seen when he was three.

Craig ended up staying with his mother, she said, and although she initially rang every day, he sounded really happy, so the phone calls became less frequent.

She said her mother appeared to lose all interest in other members of the family.

She said she never received another invitation to the house.

She told the magazine she remembered the day she received a very guarded phone call from a police officer who told her that her mother had been arrested and warned her that there could be “certain things” in the newspaper.

Two days later, the police woman visited the house with a copy of an article describing Sylvia Payne’s appearance in court where she admitted taking her teenage son as her lover.

Mrs Moran said she felt nauseated. She called her mother and asked: “Is it true?” Her mother said: “Yes.”

That is the last contact Mrs Moran has had with either her mother or her brother.

Take a Break said Mrs Payne has also indicated that she had nothing more to do with Carla.

n Sylvia Payne was sentenced to 36 months community rehabilitation by West Allerdale magistrates.

Mrs Payne, then 45, was charged under section 65 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

The crime took place on July 21 at their Gilmour Street home. The pair were in bed together watching a video, which she later said was Disney’s The Haunted Mansion.

The court heard how when Mark had a panic attack his mother cuddled him and soon they began having sex. A family member alerted police.

In a nutshell. Then they took turns chucking garden tools at the dolphin.

Many years ago, I dated a girl from Barrow, who was student in Liverpool.

She had some weird stuff going on in the bedroom, which frightened the life out of me.

And no, I won`t elaborate before you ask, as I`m still scarred ( literally ) by the experience.
Did she perform like a frog?lol

Went to Maryport and stayed for 1/2 an hour. That was enough. Silloth, the land that time forgot wasn't much better.
Sounds like something out of the old testament. And the Lord did smite the men of Silloth with great fury, for they worshipped false Gods, and cast their wine cups at the creatures of the sea.

I'd be all for giving Cumbria a whirl but it would take meticulous planning as others have said - work, location etc. Not only is it outstandingly beautiful but it's all contained in a relatively small area [compared to Wales, or Scotland, say] so you could get to know it all.

OTOH the place is invaded by grey armies half the year swinging trekking poles left and right. The main Grasmere - Ambleside - Windemere drag is a bit of a zoo, and really expensive for eating / bevvying. The coastal towns can be pretty bad - recent problems with Liverpool Businessmen running drugs up there apparently.

Barrow is ok for a run ashore @Sarnia Kevin but an absolute dive to live/stay in, I spent a couple of months there whilst working at the shipyard a few years ago, it's a couple of months I'll never get back or get over.
I used to work for James Fisher and had to go to the head office there occasionally, and worked there for a couple of weeks in 1999. The hotel they put me in was a dive, with contract workers coming in/going out at all hours of the night. It's murder to get to by train as well.
