Moving to Cumbria

I'm from Whitehaven and I fled when I was 20. It's an utter shabitehole and it's only got worse since then. Believe it or not there are no public toilets in the Town Centre. The idea is you piss in your pockets and take it home. There are about a thousand takeaways but no shops to buy anything decent from. There are charity shops and greeting card shops as that's all you'll ever need because the population live until they are 300 somehow. There are no jobs unless you want to work in Sellafield. Workington is not much better. Seriously do yourself a favour and move to Sierra Leone or somewhere less war torn. Here's a snippet of a resident from Whitehaven from when Derek Bird went taxi snipering:

..I have to say, I worked a bit on that coast and found it a depressing area. I always think of Maryport, Whitehaven and Workington as ignored. Apologies to folk who live happily up there.

Whitehaven has stood still while progressive councils have wasted or robbed all the town's money from it. It's an absolute state. Don't get me wrong, the majority of people are sound but it's the land that time forgot.

Somewhere in the Whitehaven/ Workington areas. Maybe Maryport or St Bees. But in that general area.

Grew up (from 8 till 18 when I moved to Liverpool originally for Uni) in a village just outside Barrow.

Family are all still there so go back as much as I can but would not 'want' to move back permanently although I am leaving it as an option as I am looking to move back to the UK.

Never really ventured too far up the west coast so can't comment on the areas you mention, but Barrow and Workington have a small rivalry in football so obviously they are all inbreds up that way, only what I heard on the grapevine though :).

Barrow is not all that great but the smaller towns like Ulverston & Kendal are nice towns. Ulverston in particular is a town that boast a few nice bistro pubs. If you make it to Ulverston at any time you have to go to the Farmers, the food is divine.

I think the main plus is really that the area, once you get into the lake district, is just simply beautiful. Windermere, Hawkshead, Bowness, Coniston and the more Northern lake areas have scenery that will take your breath away, in my humble opinion.
