Moving to Cumbria

BMW 's & Audi's on the drive but fish n chips on the table sums up Solihull
My ex had an uncle that lived in Birmingham and my Daughter spent 2 years in Wolverhampton University ( lived on the campus in Telford )
Both were depressing places in my humble opinion
The train journey from Telford /Wolverhampton /Birmingham to the airport was nothing but disused factories and deserted commercial buildings

Grew up (from 8 till 18 when I moved to Liverpool originally for Uni) in a village just outside Barrow.

Family are all still there so go back as much as I can but would not 'want' to move back permanently although I am leaving it as an option as I am looking to move back to the UK.

Never really ventured too far up the west coast so can't comment on the areas you mention, but Barrow and Workington have a small rivalry in football so obviously they are all inbreds up that way, only what I heard on the grapevine though :).

Barrow is not all that great but the smaller towns like Ulverston & Kendal are nice towns. Ulverston in particular is a town that boast a few nice bistro pubs. If you make it to Ulverston at any time you have to go to the Farmers, the food is divine.

I think the main plus is really that the area, once you get into the lake district, is just simply beautiful. Windermere, Hawkshead, Bowness, Coniston and the more Northern lake areas have scenery that will take your breath away, in my humble opinion.

The area around Great Urswick / Stainton / Baycliff etc, a bit further up from Ulverston, by Dalton ( toilet ) is one of the hidden gems of the West Coast of Cumbria.

With some cracking pubs too - The Farmers Arms at Baycliff being one of my favourites.

Plus the people are sound and aren`t too inbred ( Dalton ).

Haha, yeah. Defo not inbred (especially in Urswick as will be explained below :))

Love the Farmers Arms, think it might be that one but my sisters friends own that (or it is another one in the area, I forget).

My mum is from Urswick and my Grandad built a house in Little Urswick back in the 50's and my Nana/Grandad lived there until they had to move to a smaller place in Great Urswick in the 90's.

We moved to Lindal when I was 8, coming from the big smoke I was amazed by the cows, apparently :).

I`ve got good mates who live in nearby Gleaston, so know the area really well. I love it around there and the people are really sound too.

We stay at the Derby Arms in Great Urswick every year when we go up and see them ;)

If I was going to live in the lakes the only place I'd consider would be Kendal. It's a big enough town to have all the things you'd need (work, shops & entertainment) but also right on the edge of the lakes so you can very easily get to the middle of nowhere if that's what you're looking for. It's also a lot easier to get to the outside world as it's just off the A6. I know a few people that are Kendal born and bred as well as a few that have moved there and they all love it. I've only ever been up there for weddings so i can't give any firsthand experience of what it's like.

Been reading this thread with interest. I live in Barrow and although it has its problems (like anywhere) it has a lot going for it too. Employment wise, BAE is booming, house prices remain affordable, you have the Lake District National Park is 20-25/mins away, Goodison/Liverpool a little over two hours. Some great beaches/ walks.....and we have the worlds largest wind farm just off Walney, (oh yes it gets windy) I have no complaints. I can understand younger 18-25/30 wanting to get away and experience some big city life, Same up the coast, Whitehaven / Workington way, there is plenty work Sellafield / supply chain and places- St Bees, Gosforth, really nice- all depends what you want. It’s not the back of beyond everyone makes out.... We have leccy and everything. https://www.choosecumbria.co.uk/

Nice to read a positive post. Nice one . Good and bad in most areas, why should Cumbria be any different.

Haha, tell that to all the away teams fans that moan when they visit Holker St. :D:D

Still remember my mates, who supports AFC Wimbledon, story of when he visited us. The train he was on had around 30/40 fans on it and when it went over the estuary and on towards Grange the whole carriage seemed to go silent in a 'where the hell are we' kind of way.

Seriously though, you are right, it is not as backwater as some people may have it to be. My mate even has leccy and he lives in Askam ;)

Isn't Barrow in Lancashire?? <runs>

p.s. I was born In Barrow In Furness General Hospital.

Worked up in Cumbria a bit, didn’t get along with the people, think they are a bit insular and see anyone coming in as an outsider. There are some really nice places to visit up there, but there is also the nuclear plant to keep in mind and the awful road network

Kendal over Keswick do you reckon? I always think Keswick is more appealing but that's probably down to it being in the mountains more - don't know what the realities of living there are like.

Best bet would be on the mainline, Oxenholme, Penrith or the capital of Cumbria - Carlisle .... you’ll get bored quick in West Cumbria

Somewhere in the Whitehaven/ Workington areas. Maybe Maryport or St Bees. But in that general area.
Maryport on a freezing cold January Sunday morning....me and my missus were staying in a lovely village called Gilcrux and decided to visit Maryport....we decided it was the end of the known universe.....until we came across Silloth...which is the start of the unknown universe...not impressed. Having said that there are other parts of Cumbria which merit consideration. Speaking as a tourist not a former resident.....hope you find a nice part of the county to settle in...good luck !
