So, personal circumstances have led me to have to have to look at getting my own place (currently still living with ex, house is going up for sale soon).

I’m currently living just south of Norwich and have always wanted to get out of the area and move north so this could be a blessing in disguise.

As a 24 year old single male, would you recommend moving to a Liverpool, or a city fairly nearby?

It’s a bit of a broad post… but I’d love to hear any thoughts and opinions on the areas to look at buying a property (looks like a shared ownership mortgage is the best option), if jobs are easier to come by in certain places, how you find the cost of living there and any other information you feel would be helpful.

I live in Aigburth mate and it’s a great place to live as @nsno-chris has said. Are you looking to buy or rent mate? I work in Manchester, if you’re looking to rent the city centre there is great for younger lads like yourself. Right in the middle of the city, great music scene. Anywhere up here is going to be great for you, people are nicer here then in Manchester but Manchester has a bit more going on, it’s twice the size of Liverpool so it just depends what you’re looking for really

Think I’ll look to buy mate, perhaps a ‘shared ownership mortgage’, selling the house I’m in now so will have enough for a deposit but will go a bit further than a ‘normal’ mortgage going that way. Have thought about Manchester too!

Aigburth will probably give you the best return. 10 mins from the city centre, close to the prom, lark lane on your doorstep, Allerton Road not too far away. Good transport links

Stay away from north end though, they’re not right in the head up them ways
This. South Liverpool is the place to be, with the likes of Aigburth (as @nsno-chris mentioned) or around town being the best places to live.

I’m not sure how many multiples of your wage it is for mortgages anymore.

But I’m on c. £30k a year, no loan & a top credit score.

Place I’m in currently is likely to sell for £235k ish, but ‘profits’ (likely to be £40k total) will be split in half

They tend to focus on affordability these days, apparently. The days of 3 X wedge = mortgage are no longer.

The high street banks certainly do: they require a % of your net wage being 'disposable' in the sense that you're not tied down to it.

When we moved house, my mortgage lender at the time (Barclays, who I at the time banked with) wouldn't offer me a deal because I was slightly over the %.

This was even though I was asking far less than what they said I could have as a mortgage in principle. My current lender, another high street bank, were fine though.

I would recommend getting rid of any credit that you can - e.g. pay off your phone contract and any credit cards - as this will increase the percentage a lot.

Bootle lad. That’s the place

Ah okay, it was over 3 years ago since we got our mortgage so I did wonder if it had changed.

That way does seem daft, I’ve never rented but when people pay £850 for rent but aren’t able to get a mortgage worth £400 a month!
