Roberto Martinez is thought to be the hot-favourite to become the new Everton manager

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is one of the names definitely in the running and remains the favourite but the identity of the other two is unclear at this stage.

Everton officials have recently spoken to Red Bull Salzburg sporting director Ralph Rangnick, who had success at German sides Hoffenheim and Schalke, but it is not known whether he has made the final trio of candidates to replace Manchester United-bound David Moyes.

Porto's Vitor Pereira has also been approached by the Toffees while the likes of Cardiff's Malky McKay and Celtic's Neil Lennon were also linked with the post.

Everton began with a list of about 30 names and have interviewed internal candidates, turning their attentions to out-of-work managers or those whose contracts are expiring - like Pereira - before lastly sounding out those currently working at clubs.

An approach for Martinez was made last Friday - and granted by Dave Whelan - and the Spaniard emerged as the favourite after telling the Wigan chairman on Tuesday he wanted to leave the FA Cup winners after four seasons as he did not feel he was able to fulfil the task of trying to get the Latics back into the Premier League after relegation.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright met with Martinez in London on Wednesday and is expected to complete his deliberations over the weekend.

Whelan is looking for £2million compensation to allow Martinez to break the remaining 12 months of his contract, a factor which may yet come into the final reckoning.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines gave Martinez his seal of approval. "It all sort of seems to be going on at the moment," said the England international. "Thankfully we are in camp so I am keeping it at the back of my mind for now and concentrating more on England.

"Roberto Martinez has been linked with the job. He is a terrific manager so we will just wait and see."

I think I bought a left armed one but put it on the right or something
Bloody Chinese instructions

That's Shane McGowan in your avi, right?

There are, hmm, rumours that Pereira's fate with us will be known tomorrow.

Ralf as football director with either Martinez or Vitor as general manager? Somebody mentioned it earlier on... Can't say I would be disappointed either way!

Strong rumours Coming from Wigan

Strong rumour's at the moment coming from the wigan camp.
Police have had numours phone calls with complaint an old man with broken leg seen outside Robertow Martinez's house
He smashed up the car and the the wigan manager was looking out the window with the wigan chairman taking off his leg and waving it around at martinez saying ''Robertow you better not leave us and if you do you may tell that tight c**t kenwright i want that 2 million compensation as i will need counselling ........... ??

So, when does this thread finish, and the summer transfer " ITK-mixed-with-a-load-of -bloody-boolocks " one start ?

* Dowie in

you know what CJ, I've said this once before today already, and it's based on absolutely nothing

I think we'll know our new manager at some time today (Friday) and I think we're all gonna be surprised

Unless something unexpected happened with the late arrival of Ralf, I think the Martinez appointment has been nailed on from the start. As much as it pains me to admit it.

I'm not sure what Kenwrights reasons behind going through an interview process were, but if he does ultimately sign Martinez then the entire process has been a fiasco. He should have just come out and stated his intent for Martinez from the off, or simply stated he has someone lined up but cannot discuss it until the end of the season for contractual reasons.

I just want to be put out of my misery now, announce it for FFS Bill!!
