"Among those being linked with the job are Alan Stubbs, David Weir, Phil Neville and Duncan Ferguson – all former Everton players that are presently part of the backroom team. The ECHO understands that group of four have held individual talks with Kenwright and chief executive Robert Elstone during the last 48 hours about what role they see for themselves in the imminent shake-up ... Everton's board are also expected to contact Roberto Martinez for a formal interview next week"

They may play a role, but I just can't see Everton FC appointing a head coach without managerial experience. I'm much more worried from this that Martinez may be the preferred candidate.

Oh god,we could have Martinez and Stubbs as our manager and assistant by the end of next week. Or even Neville as assistant.

I think I am going to puke on myself

...in our position I reckon we need to judge a manager on his record of buying and selling because its unlikely we can get somebody with a cupboard load of trophies. An outstanding record in the transfer market has to be a key competency for any Everton boss.
Consequently, promoting from in-house would be a huge gamble. Sure they might be effective in the short-term because they inherit a decent side but when they have to strengthen with limited cash is when the real challenge comes.
I've been keeping an eye on the betting market because its always a good indicator. Poyet favourite yesterday, Martinez today, I don't think anybody truly knows which way Bill will go.

Whilst I agree especially with the transfer thing, there's a scouting team in place who have been working with moyes for years. I imagine there is a list alsong as your arm of potential targets ect as a club. That is there for a new manager if he chooses to use it. Internal appointment would carry on with that project a new outside manager could rip it up and start again or have there own ideas, names ect that could be right or wrong!

Again I'm not trying to say outside manager is wrong and inside is right, just look at the benifits of an internal appointment before you dismiss it as lack of ambition ect...

Truth is if it works and goes well an internal appointment of a big dunc could be truly great for efc. At the same time an external appointment could be great. Don't dismiss either and cross fingers we get it right!

I think we can start narrowing this down.

Interested

Duncan Ferguson
David Weir
Alan Stubbs
Roberto Martinez

Not interested

Everybody else.

Not interested or simply not considered by our board? Whoever gets the job in the end I hope will be succesfull, but not overly confident, to put it mildly, in any of the names mentioned by you. Any of the internal candidates as assistant to a proven manager has my full backing. With strong preference for Duncan or Neville (not mentioned).

Its all very well bringing in a fancy name foreign coach if there's going to be a significant investment into the playing staff. ie a project they can stamp their mark on and bring in all their own players. But we are skint. Better to have someone with a good knowledge of the English game and the qualities of our existing squad which is our best asset atm.

History in the Prem tells us the odds that the new manager who ever he is, will last less than 3 seasons(if Wenger moves on the average drops dramatically). So it's a case of fingers crossed and take the plunge whoever is chosen.Hold on it'll be a bumpy ride

this is the other big thing that we have to consider in the short term. are there players we are looking to sign who need to be followed up, an internal candidate could easily be told they are there to keep things running till the right person comes in

Not when you're talking about a club where there's no ambition and no pressure to win from the ownership.

Yes, but then again a GOOD manager wouldn't do that, they wouldn't dismantle what wasn't broken, just tweak.

this is what we should be hoping for but not convinced that's what we would get with Martinez or Poyet. Could put up with someone not inspiring the team and moving on after a drab season finishing sixth again but someone whose ego destroys what doesn't need destroying has to be avoided. It is a good job for an intelligent manager who wants to stay somewhere stable with good sense of community and be well paid for the foreseeable future. Get the whole squad believing in themselves for a full season shouldn't need a genius
