I am not even sure why people dislike him. He is a very solid player, he gives his all on the pitch, he is what you would call an old school player - a bit agressive, but knows when to stop -, also very skillful, has a really big potential and is an Everton player. I just hope he'll stay fit for the rest of the season. I strongly believe he still has something to show and prove.

At the moment he's a liability with no positional discipline to play a holding role, it's a big year for him to show he can do it when he gets the chance. But the Barnsley game showed he's still a long way off displacing either Barry or McCarthy.

He was terrific in that Barnsley game (barring the fist half hour), but I do feel more comfortable if he is part of a three in midfield rather than a two.

He is very good technically. Might be a bit lacking positionally, although I think most people just repeat this because they have read it a lot and don´t actually base it on much.

He has been injured or returning from injury plenty of times when you would imagine the manager would have liked to have had him as an option.

As with most things there is no hurry on this. He will have his chance. Young player brought in from a lower level of football. Martinez will have a timeline for where he should be at and when he should be considered a key player. It hasn´t come yet in my opinion and I´m not surprised. Injuries wont have helped.

Stop digging and digging in every corner of the club to find things to moan about and suit your agendas ;)

Didn't our resident Barnsley expert say he ran the game against them?

What the first half hour where we got badly exposed and conceded 2 goals?

He's was like a young puppy chasing a ball in the park all game and seeing as he was our only defensive minded midfielder it left gaps in the middle. He's young and trying to learn a new position but it's not sinking in quick enough at the minute, and while he's pressing the ball all over the pitch we get left exsposed further back and better teams take advantage.

Just seems to have gone out of favour with RM atm, pity. I think there is a place for him and why is he not even figuring fully onthe bench for subbing?

I'm fairly sure he is more than good enough for us. But doubt he'll ever get to show it. Because Martinez.

Bit of a harsh comment to make given that it was Martinez that brought him here.

While part of me fears Martinez will be starting Barry until he's 47, surely he'll be phasing him out.

Besic is more suited to the Barry role than McCarthy IMO, so we'll see more of him.

In his defence, he hadn't had a pre-season, it was his first game since May, and he was by far from our worst player in the first half.

The second half, when Barkley came on, he looked a step above. I agree I don't think he's good enough to be in the team yet, as some people seem to be crying out for. But to say that this year is big is premature, I think. He has already proven his ability, he just needs to match it with consistency. You could see how devastated he was to get injured against Chelsea. He's only 23, and we've got him on a long deal. This doesn't need to be rushed.
