Yes for Southall, no for James, because James wouldn't do the tackling back that Young did...and he did a fair bit in that game helping out both Wright and Wilson.
Plus scored a goal James would be proud to score, all this at the arse end of his career.

Not a huge fan of Young. Recognise his strengths but feel his weaknesses partly explain why we didn't win much more in the 60's.

Southall
Stevens Labby Ratcliffe Wilson
Kanchelskis Ball Kendall Sheedy
Lukaku Sharp

Subs : Martyn, Harvey, Reid, Watson, Latchford

they would win everything, every year.
probably about 20 i can't even remember as well

Gordon West,
Alex Parker
Brian Labone
Mick Meagan
Jimmy Gabrial
Dennis Stevens
Tony Kay
Alex Scott
Alex Young
Roy Vernon
Derek Temple

Had some good back ups
Johnny Morrisey
Ray Veall

Un beaten at home in the 62/63 season to an average gate of 51469.

Southall (although he was not in his prime anymore when i started supporting EFC)
Coleman
Baines

Gueye

Roy Vernon was more consistent imo - I have never been to a game where the GV was idolised as much as he was - he admitted himself he was inconsistent or just brilliant .... maybe he was so different to a traditional no 9 - he glided over the mud on his day - his skill levels were so high - plus his ability to hang in the air & get up so high etc....
I have seen him with Bally when Bally first came what a delight they both were,,,, The GV was ending his career, but those two together wow.....

If able to combine players from different eras, the only change to the best “team” I have been lucky enough to see would be to put Big Nev into the 69-70 title winning team! Gordon West was a really good keeper, but Nev was the best goalie in the world at his peak!

So my best line up would be the 69-70 team with Big Nev in, then the second best line up ;) would be the 84-85 title winning team!

Two great line ups, but two very different teams in the way they went about their business!

Southall
Stevens
Van Den Hauwe
Ratcliffe
Mountfield
Reid
Bracewell
Steven
Heath
Sharp
Sheedy

Heath was a much better player than Gray.....however, Gray was fantastic for us. And I also procrastinated between Mountfield and Watson.
