Hibbert imo wasn't that bad. Solid enough at right-back. A very unglamourous position. If say John Bailey hadn't have played in a very good Everton team , but had played mainly through the 1990s. He also would have gone down as a poor player for us.Pickford
Hibbert Alcaraz Kroldrup Martina
Iwobi Davies Klaasen Cleverly
Sandro Niasse
Both before my time but why do you think that team fell away so quickly the following year ?
Think I recall big Joe and one or two others mentioning the world cup in Mexico being a factor.
Also.some very poor back up players brought in or promoted through the ranks in the following few seasons. H.Newton.....T.Darracott......M.Buckley.......W.Kenny......P.Scott.......J.McLaughlin....S.Seargent......B.Wright......R.Belfitt......J.Harper......A.Styles.......D.Lawson....the decision to transfer Alan Ball has to be a major factor. Also, that team should’ve at least reached the European Cup Final, they were superior to Panathinaikos. I wonder had they got the final that season, it could’ve been a catalyst for major tilt at Europe.
I think they lost to the Greeks and then an FA Cup semi-final against the Reds in the same week or so.
But in the mid 70s, the likes of Buckley, David Smallman and Gary Jones looked like we had a bright future. The way it panned out sounds all too familiar to most of us.Also.some very poor back up players brought in or promoted through the ranks in the following few seasons. I'm sure that there are more.
Some of them half decent players for other clubs. But not good enough as replacements for our aging 1970 team.......
Ps........And I agree........Alan Ball was sold far too soon. Never really understood why we let him go.... Heard too many stories. Hard to know what to believe.
Scares me that I saw that team regularlyWest
Wright Labone Hurst Brown
Ball Harvey Kendall
Husband Royle Morrissey
Defo. I picked the 84-85 team coz I couldn't bring myself to leave anyone out. But imagine Rooney playing alongside Sharp in that teamSaw the 69/70 as a kid and obvs the 80’s, Rooney would have walked into and enhanced either in my opinion
Easy.

Hard to believe that team lost 8 games in the 84/85 season, yet were still head and shoulders above the rest. The bedwetters would have loved it.Can't be beaten.

I never saw him play at all but my uncle said Henry Newton looked like a world beater at Forest but sadly never recaptured that form at Everton.
I stand by my opinion that if Hibbert was about 2-3 inches taller he'd have been a starting England CB. The guy was awful going forward but he was an absolute defensive rock at the back. People go on and on about Wan-Bissaka, Hibbert was highly underrated by a ton of people, not the least of which is our own supporters.Hibbert imo wasn't that bad. Solid enough at right-back. I'm not comparing G.Stevens with Hibbert. No comparison really . Stevens was the by far better player. But Hibbert would have looked ok also in that team.
I'd have many many players ahead of Hibbert as being our worse.
Henry Newton wasn't terrible. But just not up to replacing Alan Ball. My point was that we just didn't replace the team of 1969/70 with like for like. I stated that some of the players that I mentioned were ok footballers. But just not good enough to carry on the success from 1970.But in the mid 70s, the likes of Buckley, David Smallman and Gary Jones looked like we had a bright future.
