Hibbert imo wasn't that bad. Solid enough at right-back. A very unglamourous position. If say John Bailey hadn't have played in a very good Everton team , but had played mainly through the 1990s. He also would have gone down as a poor player for us.
I'm not comparing G.Stevens with Hibbert. No comparison really . Stevens was the by far better player. But Hibbert would have looked ok also in that team.
I'd have many many players ahead of Hibbert as being our worse.

Both before my time but why do you think that team fell away so quickly the following year ?

Think I recall big Joe and one or two others mentioning the world cup in Mexico being a factor.

...the decision to transfer Alan Ball has to be a major factor. Also, that team should’ve at least reached the European Cup Final, they were superior to Panathinaikos. I wonder had they got the final that season, it could’ve been a catalyst for major tilt at Europe.

I think they lost to the Greeks and then an FA Cup semi-final against the Reds in the same week or so.

Also.some very poor back up players brought in or promoted through the ranks in the following few seasons. H.Newton.....T.Darracott......M.Buckley.......W.Kenny......P.Scott.......J.McLaughlin....S.Seargent......B.Wright......R.Belfitt......J.Harper......A.Styles.......D.Lawson.
I'm sure that there are more.
Some of them half decent players for other clubs. But not good enough as replacements for our aging 1970 team.......
Ps........And I agree........Alan Ball was sold far too soon. Never really understood why we let him go.... Heard too many stories. Hard to know what to believe.

But in the mid 70s, the likes of Buckley, David Smallman and Gary Jones looked like we had a bright future. The way it panned out sounds all too familiar to most of us.

I never saw him play at all but my uncle said Henry Newton looked like a world beater at Forest but sadly never recaptured that form at Everton.

Im sure he eas a hs

l think he was a half back at Notts Forest but played at full back with us. One of a raft of players who never fulfilled his past with us.

I stand by my opinion that if Hibbert was about 2-3 inches taller he'd have been a starting England CB. The guy was awful going forward but he was an absolute defensive rock at the back. People go on and on about Wan-Bissaka, Hibbert was highly underrated by a ton of people, not the least of which is our own supporters.

Flip that around, I was never on the "get Coleman to replace Hibbert" shouts, I was on the "get Coleman to replace Neville" part. Neville was neither good defensively or good going forward. The definition of average.

Henry Newton wasn't terrible. But just not up to replacing Alan Ball. My point was that we just didn't replace the team of 1969/70 with like for like. I stated that some of the players that I mentioned were ok footballers. But just not good enough to carry on the success from 1970.
We have often done that though. Break up a good team. And then lose momentum by bringng in replacements that are inferior players.
IMO the player recruitment policy from about 1971/72 was not great. It improved with a few very good buys when the much maligned Billy Bingham took over.
As for the 1970/71 season being poor.......who really knows. The world cup that year being draining on players. Alan Ball not firing on all cylinders. And the management also suffering problems. And certain players just plain and simply getting older.........who knows.
As a twelve year old in 1970 , I was expecting Everton to sweep all before them. So it was a real disappointment all round that we were just not that good the following season. But tbh I haven't a clue what really was happening. Nowadays with social media everything would have been scrutinized to death. Back then as a 12 year old there was very little information. ( The odd rumour maybe in a newspaper or magazine). Evertons downfall was a mystery to me. TBH......Everton have mainly been a mystery to me ever since..........Up the Toffees.....
