2021/22 Nathan Patterson

I've had to sign up to this messageboard.

I'm a Hearts fan from Edinburgh with a fondness for Everton (cheers Naysmith, Weir and latterly Baningme), so I have been following this thread. The DAVEK numpty that is saying that Patterson can't defend is on one. Since the minute Patterson broke through as a young lad for Rangers, his best games were in the Europa League and what he is most notable for is his fearlessness to throw himself into tackles against grown men. You see it with Tierney, Robbo and Gilmour as well. Honestly, Patterson's best attribute is aggressively winning the ball high up the pitch. If I had to compare his mentality/attitude to any player it would be Duncan Ferguson. The patter merchant on this board doesn't have a scooby about Patterson defensively. He's just seen highlights of him swinging in decent crosses and is bizarelly calling him a winger. Gerrard tried to get Tavernier and Patterson in the same team like twice in his managerial career by trying each player in an advanced position and it didn't work at all. They are both RB/RWB and damn good ones. (Patterson with a higher ceiling of course - I rate him higher than Tierney, probably on par with Robbo).

For such a young lad, you won't find a teenager in european football more switched on defensively than Nathan Patterson (well - maybe Aaron Hickey... ;) ).

Exterminate Dalek.

Subbed off in a friendly.

Yeah, let's all go overboard because he went on a run in the first half though.

Clueless.

Thing is though, where is any evidence this is lacking?
I was in Glasgow at the weekend was out with a load of Rangers fans/season ticket holders. They were asking why Patterson wasn’t getting a game. Said I’d no idea but seems to be suggestion he can’t defend. They were all taken aback - quote “he loves a tackle, great defending one on one”. They did say positional awareness could improve but tbf true of almost all young defenders and improves with games. In summary nowhere near the one dimensional great going forward/defensive liability that’s being suggested on here.

If he would add creativity to the team and create chances then play him. I have a feeling he's not getting minutes because of his defensive game but if he offers more in attack than Coleman, which looks probable, then Lampard should look for a way to balance it out so he can play
He's just not a defender. It's well known.

I've said befoe, if you want to play him as a make do winger then do that. But every single game he plays he underlines he's not a defender - tonight included.

Positional awareness doesn't bother me as much anyway considering how fast he is.

Why were you watching a Scotland friendly? You hate them.

How many mins did you boy get, didn't notice him

You should have told them it's because our RB has won 6 points against Leeds and Newcastle recently.

In bulk here: a player taken off in a friendly.

You'd think he was waltzing through defences in a meaningful game.

You'll never find a defender who loves a tackle more than Patterson. He's another Tierney.

Here you, why are you telling everyone Patterson can't defend?

Do you really think your precious premier league is that big a deal? Patterson will put EPL wingers in the stand with no hesitation. You playing on people's ignorance here by telling every Tom D1k and Harry that he is a winger is an absolute joke by the way. He's one of the most aggressive tacklers you'll find and he kens 352/532 like the back of his hand.
