I've seen him put in one decent cross all season...

Tbf that probably does rank the same as our other wingers.

He's injured anyway, probably a month or two. Luckily we'll only have another 3 games to get through until the end of Jan. Yay.

Walked out, hadn’t even realised he’d gone off injured!

I have seen him directly run at defenders, which is more than McNeil or Gordon have achieved this season.

Play Godfrey there. Will have to play Iwobi wing-back in a 5. Only way we seem to have a chance of winning games anyway like.

But whatever happens we should be buying a right-back soon. Because we were absolutely mental to spend £12m on one, a year ago, with so little experience and then basically put all the onus on him to be first choice in his first full season.
Mental to spend £12m on him? Are you being serious? We were all singing his praises earlier this season for the way he was playing. And he's 21. He's coming back from an injury and he's bound to have a few stumbles anyway. I know it's not just you, there are some awful takes in here tonight. But buying Patterson is one of the few things the club has done right in the last few years. We should have already had a Coleman replacement long before he got brought in, if that's the point you're making.

Yes we were mental this time last year to spend £12m on a lad with 16 apps and i said it at the time.

He's got potential, and earlier in the season he played okay - Leeds was excellent, derby was good, v West Ham he was good. He showed some of that potential.

But where we were last year, he wasn't the right choice, because we needed an immediate fix. Shown by the manager being unwilling o risk him too early and then unfortunately he got injured. This season the pressure has been on him and of course as a young player he'll have ups and downs. But IMO he looks way, way too raw to be a starting right-back in a team that needs to scrap to stay up, that's all.

He's the type of player we should have signed 6-7 years ago when Coleman was going strong. But what we needed last year was a player ready to come in and take straight over, like Digne did with Baines. We still need that now. But there's other positions that are more of a need.

On a night of deep sadness after that shameful, chastening, depressing defeat and performance, probably the saddest thing for me is seeing people on here saying they are happy that a young Everton player, who at least has a go and isn’t close to being the finished article, is now out injured and missing for a few weeks.

He gets no support or cover from McNeill or the midfield and was constantly trying to be an attacking outlet for us, so is suffering for that, but loads pile on him and now are pleased he’s hurt??!

I dunno what to say tbh.

I'm not happy, I want him to do well, despite what a poster - who has no right to lecture anyone on how to be 'nice', as they regularly come across as a pretty pratty person on here - might say.

I'm not bothered right now that he won't be in the team because I think he's a bit rubbish. He's been a liability in some recent matches. But I want him to recover and to be taken care of and only brought back when he's ready.

People are raw after tonight and young or old the players and manager deserve the criticism. Emotions run high, especially after stuff like that. And Patterson was as bad as anyone else out there today, no excuses.

Fair enough. I agree that we needed a more immediate fix at the time, 100%. But it should have been Patterson plus that player, with Coleman dropped. But we had hamstrung ourselves financially and people at the club have been super naive about Coleman for a while.

But I just strongly disagree on the assessment of him. £12m in this market for a young fullback with his potential is an outstanding deal. He has mostly really impressed me defensively this season. I've actually been more disappointed by his offensive output, which I was probably only surprised about because of a couple of odd ones in here. He's tenacious, mobile, has a good attitude. He had a nightmare tonight, but he's quickly become one of my favorite players at the club.

Overall I'm just tired of the hyperbole on some of these player threads, and I should probably just log off for tonight instead of getting involved.

Yeah as toxic as this thread has been for a while now, this is still rough.

Hadn't even been naive - Coleman asked them to sign his replacement in 2020. Club simply failed to do it.

A £12m initial outlay is a lot for a lad with 16 apps (I think that was the number, maybe 21) for bloody Rangers mate, and not many of those were starts. Look at Estupinan who went to Brighton - £15m. He's only 24, had European experience with Villarreal and international experience with Ecuador. The talent gap there is massive.

For what he might be, we might ultimately say it's a snip, but we didn't really have £12m to be throwing about on potential when we needed that immediate fix. That immediate fix didn't have to be the extreme of Trippier on £140k a week (he's proved well worth it I reckon, mind), but should have been targeting that 24-26 bracket.

That's all my point is. We didn't have a ton of money to spend and again, spent it IMO unwisely for our immediate needs. Just like we did with Maupay and McNeil in the summer.

It’s quite gutting and sad to see, and there’s been some nasty stuff on this thread previously. I understand some of the thought process - he has a shocker tonight and they have been other dodgy moments, but the kids got massive potential and I would hope we could get behind that.
Well I apologise for one as it wasn't my intention. Hope the lad gets well soon. Probably good for him to be taken out of the firing line based on his last few displays, but obviously we don't want anyone injured.
Appreciate the apology mate, and you were not the only one by any stretch. As I said above, I can understand peoples thoughts on the lad, it’s just quite sad for me.

Not a bad price for a prospect but he wasn’t ready for when he come in and still isn’t not what we needed or need now an unproven kid with limited experience and all these issues add to the overall problem of us simply not being good enough.

Was very poor but having Mcneil ahead of him was a killer, Patterson has to try and take players on because Mcneil won't, he then basically has to track back and defend on his own aswell.
