Oh I mean I don’t know for sure. It’s just quit common in the modern game to not have people on the posts. I think managers don’t want to be outnumbered in the box. It’s bizarre but so is modern football.

Thing is if you have players manning posts, you lose the chance of off side for any goal against you.

As a former amateur goalkeeper myself, it boils my blood to see goals creep in at unmanned posts from corners. These are things you can control. So, control the controllables. Worrying about playing fellas onside is nonsense. It's a corner. They're all onside. A properly-marshalled defence can deal with second balls after any initial clearance. But the men stay on the post until that ball clears the penalty box. Being outnumbered is also a nonsense. No team is packing the box with almost every outfield player unless it's injury time. They always keep at least one back - and others will be outside the box. As mentioned, a well-marshalled defence has a chance to cope with that - but nobody can cope with unmanned posts. If the ball ends up there - as if often does from set plays - it's a goal. A preventable goal.

Any time I see a goal creep in at an unmanned post, I put the blame squarely on the goalkeeper. He is not dominating his area. I doubt managers - who know next to nothing about goalkeeping - are dictating this in most cases. Maybe people like Benitez - who think they know everything - are. But in most cases, I'm sure goalkeepers - and their coaches - are deciding what the course of action is in these situations. Same for free-kicks. If a wall does not do its job, it is almost always the fault of the goalkeeper. Yes, there are cases where an idiot ducks or pulls away from his team mates leaving a gap and selling his goalkeeper down the river, but the keeper must set it up correctly and choose the right position on the line to deal with the ensuing shot. Anybody ducking should be royally bollocked and be left in no doubt where the finger of blame is pointing. This is where the likes of David de Gea fall down. Too quiet.

I'll stop you right there.

Having men on the posts is 100% down to the manager & coaching staff. It is them that tells the players how they want them to defend corners and free-kicks.

Look at the direction he's facing here as the ball goes in and the positioning:

We'll get battered by them next week if this lad doesn't start doing basics.
This goal is definitely on Myko and Iwobi
Forest goal you can blame Patterson for not watching Johnson on the rebound though
Knock yourself out with that one Dave!
I'm happy with him so far, think he'll get better and better

...I'm just looking for an answer. What's Patterson's role at that corner. If you dont know then that's ok. It doesn't reflect badly on you.

…I think Everton deploy zonal marking, so perhaps his job is to pick up anybody attacking the back post. I suggest you get screen shots of Brentford’s other corners to determine if our players take up similar positions.

Defo on myko he was slow coming out after he'd just gone down with cramp. If he does his job and steps out on line then the scorer is a mile offside. Patterson has stepped out correctly to make the bloke offside.

He can get away with these lack of concentration moments in the Scottish try to play football leagues.

He needs to take his game to a higher level but he has shown promise.

He is a young player.
He will make mistakes and needed help on Saturday, when he was struggling.
Got to give him time, I thought we should have be brought Coleman on myself in the second half, but you can see there's a really good player in the making with him.

This is the first corner goal in ages and we've defended them quite well with no one manning the posts for about 6 months, also.

First individual error and people jumping to that for no reason...?

It looks to me like we had a hybrid marking system: Tarkowkski, Coady and Keane were playing zonal and the rest of the players were set man marking duty.

There's no way in any case if it was zonal that Patterson should have been where he was. Zonal is not static, it shifts with the opposition placement in the box in that ongoing phase of the set piece.
