Look at the direction he's facing here as the ball goes in and the positioning:

We'll get battered by them next week if this lad doesn't start doing basics.

This is a brilliant screenshot you've posted. The full defence has reacted to the flight of the ball by pushing up and you can see that Patterson is perfectly in line with his teammates. Mykolenko and Iwobi haven't plus Iwobi completely loses his man. Unforgivable. Thanks for posting this. The only person needing to start doing the basics is Iwobi. The helpful screenshots from the other posters has really shown how Patterson is doing all the right things here and Iwobi has shown his defensive frailties.

If Mykolenko gets out there then the Brentford lad is offside. I'm sure Lampard will be going through them in the video analysis.

….and demonstrates to me how much we miss DCL clearing headers from the front post.

It's fantastic. In real time you think "ok the ball ends up back post, maybe Patterson has had some role to play in this?" but davek's helpful screenshots really highlights how well Patterson is carrying out his basic defending duties at set pieces and really buries Iwobi and to an extent Mykolenko. Not to mention those who do not win the first header.

Well done Patterson, sorry if any of us doubted you. Thank you davek for the evidence. If it wasn't for his teammates switching off, it would've been a clean sheet for Nathan. Shame.

Here he is in a straight line with his two CBs, anyone deeper then those guys needs shooting tbh.

It's Iwobi keeping them onside from the header.

The point about Patterson is he's effecting nothing. He's marking no one at the corner and when the ball gets nodded on he's turning away from goal and there's no chance of a recovery.

He's struggling in defence. At one point Coady had a go at him for letting the ball bounce in the area and ducking under it allowing a goal scoring chance.

If you're Klopp you look no further than Everton's right side for Saturday to exploit. The communication there is appalling and we need to be getting Coleman in at a minumum to play RCB as he has a feel for the RB berth. The only one in this squad that does.

I don't care if he's 16, 20, or 37 if I think we need someone better at rb I will say it
Of course we do.

I've said for the last 6 months we need a RB bought. Coleman has too many mistakes in him as he's gotten older and Patterson will never be a defender...just doesn't have that in him.

Weird game for him on Saturday. Thought a lot of his work was good but was caught napping for the goal, also had that weird moment were he just let the ball roll off his back for the Brentford player to latch on cross the ball and Toney headed onto the post and somehow they ballooned the rebound.

So how many points has he gained for you in your fantasy dream team online ?

What that picture does not show is Brentfords number 10 preparing for a run. That is what Patterson is watching and preparing himself for. Watch on TV and you then understand why Patterson is where he is. Pictures can be deceptive and not tell the full story
