2024/25 Nathan Patterson

I think if he comes back we would have a really balanced first team if Harrison starts at RW.

It would mean that we could have Myko dropping into a 3 at CB when we are in possession, with Patterson providing the attacking width and overlap on the right...

….whilst I’d be chuffed to see Patterson break through, I’m not even sure he’s been that decent from an attacking perspective. I can think of a terrific cross for the Danjuma goal, an assist for Beto from deep and a good ball in for a Dobbin header in an U23 game but he’s often been wasteful in the top third. He’s certainly been poor defensively.

It’ll be fascinating to see if he’s even ahead of Dixon in the pecking order, He’s clearly got some work to do on the training ground to get himself into the reckoning given the players picked ahead of him last term.

Sometimes a lengthy spell out can do a player good, make him reflect on his performances, let’s hope that’s the case with Patterson.

I think that's a fair analysis mate. I just think his better output is in an attacking player rather than in a defensive manner so we should utilise and play on that more. Will also mean we have more options and outlets when going forward. Be a bit more dynamic.

Utter myth, by the way, unless you believe the same for all of the other options.

….just what I see with my own eyes. Terrific away at Leeds where him and McNeil worked really well defensively for the cause but more often bereft in how to mark his opponent. He’s a joy for a winger because he either rushes at them making it easy for them to get beyond him or he’s in no man’s land allowing crosses to come in.

He’s got decent physicality about him and he’s actually good enough in possession but he’s just really naive when it comes to defending. It’s not saying he can’t sort it out but I understand why Coleman, Young and Godfrey were picked ahead of him last season.

He’ll get his chance, let’s hope he can take it.

So, just to reiterate, you think it's the same for the rest? As he's actively doing more/better than his counterparts when playing.

Have to agree with this. His defensive issues are when we are not sat in deep but playing a little more forward generally. The 40-50% of possession region we occasionally get in a game rather than the usual 25-40% with backs to the wall.
In a low constant block he is decent enough & gets many interceptions a bit like Myko. The difference with Myko though is that he is more disciplined in getting goal side or at least shoulder to shoulder with the opposition attacking player when we are further up the pitch whereas Patterson overly commits like you said. He also doesn't get tight enough to his man in those more advanced defending positions so the commitment he does make is only making it easier for the left sided attacking player to get past & have his way with us.
He's worthy of a chance though once back to full fitness. New midfield players may change his play for the better. Hopefully time away will have been a useful time for him to reflect on his Everton career so far.

Is he really? And even if he is does that mean he’s the answer? He’s still way off it and we need a new RB.
He is yeah, for some marginally but still better. He's not the answer, he's the best of a mediocre bunch though, and I'd personally prefer him and Dixon get minutes as at least there's room to improve like. We need more depth either side regardless.

"He'll make a mistake" gets bandied around a lot, which is a good point if the "experienced" alternatives weren't making worse mistakes anyway.

I can't disagree with the first paragraph and first sentence of para 2.

Patterson is a much better offensive FB than defender

However exactly the same was true of Coleman at that age.

I would suggest that it is easier to coach a player to defend than to attack , so that's a failing of Dyche IMO

One thing you can say for him, he`s not a walking red card like Young.

At some point, we`ve get away from the axis of Young and Coleman and if this means Patterson and Dixon coming in and making some mistakes along the way, so be it.

Let`s face it, Young is a walking red card and his legs have gone and Coleman is falling to pieces, so now is the time integrate Patterson and Dixon into the team.

Yeah but can Patterson give such outstanding assists as Young did on the weekend :hayee:

Ideally for me now Seamus would remain in the background as an off-the-field leader and allow the likes of Patterson and Dixon to get more experience if the manager is prepared to not play his best mate Ashley for 95 minutes every game.

At the very least I hope Patterson is given 30-odd minutes here and there over the next fixtures and if he impresses or Youngey disappoints then give Pattycake an extended run - the same treatment that's been extended to Ashley and Seamus despite horrific runs of form for the pair of them.
