It's an anti-tanking gimmick. My guess is without it the Spurs and Pelicans completely shut it down and a few other teams that didn't make it still put an effort out much longer. So agreed on the bolded. These teams aren’t the ones tanking in the first place though. Really the NBA should just do away with the lottery and say every team that didn’t make the playoffs has the same odds to get the top pick. Just make the whole lottery a random draw with equal odds.Pelicans and I’m a fan of it for what Iggy said. No team should actively look to crash their season late on to try get a better draft pick.
