NCAA (US College) Sports

But every single weekend doesn't matter to Alabama, LSU, Georgia, or even Ohio State for that matter, as much as it would for a TCU or USC.

While I do agree the SEC is the best conference, top to bottom, year in year out, the difference between the SEC and the next two or three conferences isn't as great as the media/SEC apologists say that it is. And it's in those margins where the SEC wins out on rankings 4, 5, 6, 7 b/c they all play each other, boosting each others' strength of schedule

A 12-team playoff will still disproportionately award SEC teams, because *they are better* but at least it removes the mystery by giving every team a chance. But it will help the TCUs as well as the Oregons and Michigans and Clemsons.

Or no losses! Do you remember 2004? USC finished as national champs but Oklahoma (12-0), Auburn (12-0), Boise (11-0) and Utah (11-0) did not get any chance to *play* for the title! All 4 were top-10 ranked! A playoff should have settled that. We aren't talking UCF 2017, because they weren't actually good (although a 12 team playoff would have given them a well earned chance), we are talking 4 undefeated teams (and 2 from power conferences) with 0% chance to be national champion!

Do you think that was better? What about 2003 with "split" national champions LSU and USC? It's an absurd denial of history to think the old system was better.
Depends on what you define as “better” I suppose. You’re right, 2004 is probably the best argument against the old system, although Utah was in the Mountain West at the time, so actually only one team from a power conference got left out. Aside from that year,

I’m just recalling how Tennessee and Florida, who were not big rivals prior to the 90’s, forged one of the most intense rivalries of the era simply because they played what amounted to a Loser Leaves Town game in the third week of September every year. Sure, we lost most of them, but it made it so much more satisfying to win knowing that not only had we kept out title hopes alive, but also effectively ended theirs. Nothing like that could ever happen now, and CERTAINLY won’t with a 12 team playoff where you’ll most likely have three loss teams playing for a championship.

I suppose you excluded either intentionally, but Oklahoma and Auburn were my two missing power conference teams. And Boise was better than Utah at any rate, and more deserving between the small schools. I get it if you don't like the playoff system or have some grudge against certain schools who seem to frequent the top of the rankings, but if you like single elimination football then you should want a 24+ team, 5 week playoff. At least I think we'll be heading there soon enough, and 5 weeks would provide 23-28 bowl games total (plus any vestigial bowls, like Army Navy); that's clearly better football than what we have now.

Didn’t exclude Oklahoma. They got absolutely battered in the NC game by USC. Auburn was the odd man out that year.

Whats happening in this pac 12 championship game is why we need a playoff. Ohio State and Alabama get to sit at home while USC plays the number 11 team in the country for absolutely no upside all downside.

And one of those two teams gets to back into the playoff

It’s bonkers

Shocking tackling by USC. Every Utah TD this half has involved one of their guys dragging a USC defender into the end zone for at least 10 yards.

If they were losing this close or they just got unlucky at the end I would agree with you. But Utah has manhandled them this second half. Outscored them 30-7 and just whipped them all over the field. They’re eliminating themselves.

But the benefactor isn’t utah

It’s two teams that aren’t even playing

LOL

USC and TCU both lose

Two teams that couldn’t make their conference championship game gets into the tourney. What a joke.
I think TCU is going to get in. Alabama is probably the better team, but TCU has a better resume, and “deserves” the spot. Alabama really doesn’t have a great win this season, and has lost twice. Regardless of everything else, losing twice should be disqualifying.

TCU making it in is justice.

Was definitely concerned Bama would squeak in
