Neighbourhood Etiquette

We got new neighbours about 4 years ago , really nice couple ex forces lifer's.
We enjoy our privacy so its a good morning , good afternoon whenever we see them.

We noticed tho every time we done something they done the same , new front door , new fencing , new full house blinds , garden lighting etc.
Now I've had a pond for 20yrs , quite hidden from view from the neighbours.
He poked his head over one day earlier this year "didn't know you had a pond , I'd love one of them".....so he did.

Getting a bit miffed with this by now , we were at a charity night in our local school .
I spotted a 3ft Plastic Pink Flamingo and asked if I could borrow it , went home and planted next to my pond within next doors eyeline.

True enough a day or 2 later " that's very striking that flamingo " says the neighbour.
"Yeah keeps the Heron's away mate" says me.

Again true enough , a 3ft Pink Flamingo appears proudly stood next to their pond.

I've promptly returned said Flamingo back to the shool lol
Next step .... get someone to park a Bentley on your drive.

My suggested additions:

1) red light in a front bedroom window
2) A scarecrow on your front drive
3) a wooden carving of a nun flashing her boobs. For by the pond.
4) a giant cross on top of your roof

There is a growing problem with daytime and night time vermin in the area, turns out everyone knows who is responsible, some pillock has taken it upon himself to be feeding the urban foxes, and even when the foxes aint around the foods being ate. It doesn't help that there's a shut in a few doors away that wont deal with either their front or back garden, so there's a ton of cover, ready food, and a lack of natural predators (cats), so now people are noticing a growing problem, some poor schmo that works on cruise ships so aint here all that much had to rip up all the decking that covered his back yard, there was 'kin hundreds of em. And now there's a ton of rules on poisoning because bait has to be covered to stop birds getting at it. I've a few traps here n there, if I kill a few I may post them to him. The massive 'kin prick!
We had someone like that.

We have the occasional rat or two in the area as we live on the back of a massive park and also next to a school so its a decent place for them to hang around looking for food and shelter.

We did everything we could, put traps down, covered any holes etc, changed the plus on our bins (a big dumper one) and then I came home one day and saw a load of white bread strewen outside the public are at the back of the house. Seems that some idiot was feeding foxes. Now I like a good fox don't get me wrong, we often see them in the back but how stupid can somebody be? It doesnt help the foxes either for them to become reliant on humans.

Then again it took me ages trying to explain to one of the girls in the building that the house doesnt have rats just because she saw one in front of the house. Took me ages to point out that rats dont really understand the concept of home ownership.

Who was responsible for feeding the vermin and trying to feed the foxes? And how did you convince them to knock it off? I've seen foxes a few times, they know the days the bins are taken because they know stark raving knob heads will chuck extra bags out they can rifle through and the knock on effect is swarms of rats then move in on the trashed bags. One problem feeds the next so to speak. Way things are going, I'm gonna need Siegfried & Roy to move in over the road at this rate.

Honestly I just kind of shouted at them in a semi reasonable way! We have two massive old houses next to each other with a bunch of flats in each one so we kind of manage everything to do with the grounds as a collective so it was easy enough (for now). Still doesnt stop the dope upstairs leaving the front door wide open whilst he takes stuff to and from his car though, its ok for him he doesnt live on the ground floor like me...

The culprit was one of the lads next door. He didnt know there was an issue, I think he is a bit of an oddball (a harmless enough one) so took him at his word and hopefully it wont happen again.

We will never get rid of them (rats not the people, although...) it's one of the things we just have to face with living next to a park so we just manage it better by keeping on top of things cleaning the bins every couple of months, plugging gaps under decking with wire wool, banning bird feeders, bait boxes with the tea bag (for want of a better word) poison in etc. We do get a gang of ravens and magpies out the back who seem to be on our side too by attacking anything that moves. Not the squirrals though, we get loads of them too but they are well hard so nobody messes with them.

Another advantage of living in a small village in Switzerland is that no one would dream of stealing much less damaging bins of others - same goes for the sanitation workers

Lot of respect for people’s property and law
