Neville Southall

Even back in the day,I was confident with the 2nd choice keeper Jim Arnold. He had some fantastic games when called upon
Very true that, one game was the Man.Unt. cup tie at Old Trafford, he was absolutely brilliant with save after save, only to finish on the losing side when they scored around the 96th. minute.

This kind of made me laugh.

Alan Myers, former Toffees press officer, recalls just how close Southall came to the hot-seat.
Myers recalls:

“I don’t think anybody, including Neville himself, was aware of how close he came to becoming Everton manager.

"I was outside Bellefield with [chairman] Peter Johnson the morning after Joe had left and we were discussing who should take over as caretaker boss. ‘I have a shortlist of two,’ said the chairman, ‘Dave Watson and Neville, but I’m leaning towards Neville because a goalkeeper has less responsibility on the pitch.’

"At this point, Neville pulls up in the car park - it was early and he was always first in for training - gets out his car and heads to the Bellefield entrance.

"Seeing me he yells, ‘Alright Alan, you fat c***!’ As he headed in through the doors, Peter, says very dryly, ‘I think the shortlist is down to one.'"

I think he would of been amazing manager, he has high standards and thinks big.

He jointly managed Wales for a couple of games and I think he had a stint in the lower leagues (Dover/hastings? iirc). They did not go well. I don't think he is suited to management as he was too abrasive to deal with the people in charge, but as a goalkeeper coach he would have been excellent.

Unfortunately, I agree with this part entirely and hence why sadly the club gas seemed to have shunned him over the last decade or two.

However, he is the epitome of what Everton really means to some people: he would always put the club first and not his other peoples' interests.

His expectations truly are Nil satis nisi optimum because only the best, nothing else, does in his eyes. I've said it before, for me he's one of the greatest we've had.

He should be held in regard like Dean, Ball, Labone, Kendall and Young.
