The issue is Italy has special tax breaks for high level sports people including coaches but there are clawback provisions if you do not spend long enough working in Italy and/or move too quickly into a new role abroad.What? With the UK you mean? Or Spurs.
Fonseca would potentially face a significant retrospective tax bill in Italy and Spurs would not indemnify him against this & the net post tax salary at Spurs was not sufficiently above that at a Rome (if at all) to compensate for this.
Fonseca would almost literally wind up paying the Italian tax man to manage Spurs...or us...or any non-Italian club.
