Martinez made sure that he got the compensation that he was entitled to…same as every other manager who gets sacked by any other club. Blame Kenwright for giving him that contract if you must, not Martinez for simply taking what he was owed.
Andy Gray is, rightly, a legend amongst Everton players for that ‘84-‘85 season. But that doesn’t mean that he’s a nice bloke. Everything I’ve ever seen of him, including as a player, suggests that he’s an egotistical, selfish twit who looks after Andy Gray above all else. He’s done nothing for this club since he left. Hasn’t come back as a coach, even when relegation threatened, declined the chance to manage us.
Great player? Yes.
Great bloke? Not necessarily.
True Evertonian? Certainly not. Compare Gray with Joe Royle. Both strikers, both league winners with Everton. But only one answered the call when this club was looking over the precipice.
If Gray doesn’t like to be “called out”, or you don’t think he should be, then he shouldn’t be mates with fools like Richard Keys who feel the need to tear into all and sundry when the bloke sitting next to them isn’t exactly the model professional.
