Ah, you ask the 64 million dollar question there mate.Good points mate, especially about the risk about the up and coming guy even though I still think that is better for us in the long run if we could actually find him.
Alonso was a good player I envied. He tends to spend a lot if he gets his way. A bit of a scattergun rather than sharp eye IMO. I think we have suffered from this over the last 5 years or so.
I am pretty sure his default style is pretty defensive. How do you feel about that if it is Allardyce type footy?
Yes, I can’t pretend that I’d be happy with allardyce style football, and Benitez is inherently defensive. Some managers adapt a little especially following criticism of their style, but Benitez may be too old and too stuck in his ways for that.
What I’d hope for though would be that he might be able to stop us leaking poor goals and some of his abrasive character and winners mentality might rub off on the team of lazy, spineless primadonnas that we saw this season.
I’m not honestly sure that he’s be a good appointment in terms of playing style, but it would surprise me if it was any worse than some of what we’ve seen recently.
It’s galling really, but the reality is that apart from a few games under big Joe with the likes of Kanchelskis and Limpar when we looked quite slick, and the first Martinez season where we actually dominated other sides, we haven’t played the type of football that the Catterick and Kendall sides were famed for since those bygone days. It’s a long time ago though, and so if Benitez comes in and puts a bit of steel into this lot, then I for one will forgive the lack of adventurous football…for a while anyway.
Having said all that, I wouldn’t mind seeing Potter at the helm. I think he’d build an attractive looking side. Problem is that the owners won’t risk a bad season and a flirt with relegation before the new stadium is there. Too much of a risk to their investment at this point I guess.
