You do realise the PL season has finished last week, don't you?

Btw going to move this thread to the new signing forum

Yes, I do realize it ended last week. I figured now might be a good time to watch some game replays and decide on a team before the season starts.

Considering that most of these are rude - maybe I won't consider Everton. Very unwelcoming.

On these Football forums you tend to get a lot of people on the wind up (you may even be one of them lol), so people assume these types of posts aren't serious.

But if you are genuine, then we aren't a bad team for an outsider to follow. For someone to really "get" Everton it's usually best if they can get to a game at some point so they can experience what Goodison is like. Obviously difficult for you if you're in the States though. Being brutally honest, whilst Everton have one of the proudest histories in English Football (you would be best to read up on our history), we've been mediocre for 20 + years now so unfortunately there have been far more disappointments than success stories in that time.

It also depends on what type of person you are. If you are the type of person who likes to fit in with others and follow the crowd, then an Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea or Man United are for you. If you want to follow a club who still has a connection to its local community and a deep connection with its fans then the 3 biggest and best examples in the Premier League of that in my opinion are Everton, West Ham and Sunderland.

Regarding being "rich" we now have a new influx of money at the back of us, which means that we now have a good chance of competing at the top of the table again. Our new investor is only about 9th richest in the league though so we're not doing a "Man City or Chelsea" where we're just hoping to buy instant success. There is talk of a new stadium within 3 years and our squad last season was thought to have massively underachieved due to a poor manager. Our younger players are considered to be some of the best in Europe and Lukaku has a supposed price tag of £65m, and Stones £40m so there is talent in our team.

We have strong links with some well known American players - Tim Howard, probably having the most significant and prolonged career in the PL as an American, and Landon Donovan also spent time here and still follows the club.

This could be a bold prediction that could go horribly wrong, but you may find that following us just at this moment in time could pay off well for you. If you jump on a Chelsea/Man United type bandwagon then no one will respect you, and the same with Spurs or Leicester after this season. We on the other hand have a good chance of success in the near future and are one of the last few remaining big clubs in England that still has our identity in tact.

Will try and find some videos to give you an idea of what we're about.

@FutbolGuy See that's my point we shouldn't have to convince you.

I'm not from England either. I am Irish. I was born in the late 70's and so grew up in the 80's when most people in Dublin and in Ireland in general were Liverpool and Man Utd supporters including my brothers.

I started to watch Liverpool games as they were watching them and it felt wrong there was something off about that lot and then i watched Everton beat them and was hooked from then on i knew i was born to be a blue.

I guess my point is if you have to be sold or convinced by fans and supporters and not by simply watching and having a feel for the team you are watching then you might as well move on to someone else.

There's no convincing being an Everton fan you either are born into it, drawn into it and simply love them even through these bad times.

Trust me you will get it if you are really intrigued about Everton.

I'm from Massachusetts.

Liverpool is the closest city in England to the city of Boston in terms of culture and sense of humour. Both got weird accents thanks to massive amounts of Irish immigration, both got plenty of Irish surnames. So if you ever take a trip the city, you'd feel more at home than anywhere else in England.

So maybe it's would be a natural fit to follow us or the ones who inhabit Mordor, also known as Anfield, which is where we used to play until it turned to the darkside and been blasphemic ever since they took the name and crest of the city. They even play in red they are that evil.

The only other connection would be that since 1999, apart from the years 2004 and 2005, Everton have had an American in the first team squad. Whether it was Tim Howard, Joe Max Moore, Brian McBride, or Landon Donovan.

Not all evertonians are rude it's just they are die hard and their views can be misinterpreted as rude watch re runs of games and make your own mind up my uncle has not lived in England for decades ( Canada and florida) he's an evertonian

Reruns are boring. Best to watch them live and see the reactions in the forums.

Everton has been quite the "goody two shoes" club, with a successful history that haven't really been relived in the past 20 years. We're in transition right now ownership wise, so we'll be in for a rough ride now and then. Exciting times though as you can see with the amount of activity in the forums.

subtle innuendo follows...

Mate there's a club in Liverpool that will sell their soul to convince someone to like them and spend money on them, it's not Everton though

@FutbolGuy you'll not find many on here who became Evertonians via a conscious decision, enough said really.

I empathise with your situation because I made the same decision about 10 years ago (I live in Adelaide, Australia). My mates and I were really getting into the premier league and I wanted a team to follow to enhance the experience of watching the games (be it games involving the team I chose to follow, or for what was in the interests of that team if I was watching a neutral game).

It's interesting that a lot of the comments are "you can't be convinced, Evertonians are born", which is easy to say when you're born and raised in the midst of an Evertonian influence in Liverpool. With the disconnect we both experience, you need to "force" an initial connection, before developing a strong sense of identidy to a club. My first connection came from Tim Cahill. He became a poster boy of Australian football after the 2006 World Cup and following him at club level became a natural progression. From watching the games and researching the club, the connection grew stronger and Tim became just another player for the club I loved, rather than the Everton being the club a player I loved played for.

And I agree with the sentiment of not wanting to choose a "rich club" or "relegation fodder". I think it'd be an empty feeling following a club like Man City; where the expectation is always to win and there's an underlying sense of relief in watching them win, rather than joy. And the logistics of following strugglers from abroad is hard; if they are relegated, it makes it hard to follow. We don't get anything besides the Champipnship promotion playoffs broadcast here, so if my team goes down, how do I follow them. If you lived in the city and went to the games, that's not a problem.

Anyway, that ended up being longer than I planned, but the basic message is, you need to find an initial spark (I think the Tim Howard speech may be that connection moment for you). After that, it won't take long for an affinity and connection for the club to grow.
