Great photo that (thanks
@Zezti) showing Gomes during Mina's goal. Much better from him and shows how valuable he can be.
But there are two other moments that show where he's limited for the needs of the team.
At 6.18 Gomes comes across to screen the Brentford strikers, good
At 6.20 he checks on Brentford AM and Gray; Keane doesn't help through his marshalling and seems to put Gomes off
As the decisive pass is about to played Gomes movement is away from the screen to the free player.
He has to block the passing line through that area and if he keeps this line Gray will pick up the free player.
If the ball is played far right the defence has time to reset.
So really Gomes has one job to screen the pass which if it gets past will be a 2v2 but with the advantage of the two CBs knowing how that ball will come in because Gomes has reduced the potentials of the pass.
By the time Alan has got to the passer Gomes had left it wide open for Brentford to pick a pass. And its back to 2-1.
What Gomes doesn't get here is a worry. Sure these things happen, but its too often.
If you the oppositon your looking to draw Alan out and have Gomes screen (centrally or from the wings it doesn't matter)
Given its 3-1 in the 64min this one may be a bit harsh but it illustrates his lack of intent/pace (potential)
When Kean puts that lovely through ball in between the lines (which Alan and Gomes did well to set up and has Franks influence all over it)
Gomes is in the best position to make an unchecked run into the box and give the Myko another option besides Richarlison whose already taken out of play by the two CBs.
There were 3CBs and Alan to cover and back Gomes' run. Doucs would've been in there.
Maybe nitpicking a decent performance but these are two vital areas that need improving if he's going to keep up with the improvement.
There are going to be more games than not where he isn't going to find the space/pick the passes he had to play in.
