Newcastle Utd (and Viz)

Sportswashing or sportwashing is the hosting of a sporting event, or owning of a team as a means for a country to improve its reputation, particularly if it has a poor record on human rights.

For example, Amnesty International's UK branch criticised the choice of Azerbaijan as host of the 2019 UEFA Europa League Final on the basis of its human rights violations, calling the hosting of the final an "attempt to sportswash its image".[1]

Basically shouting LOOK OVER THERE, while they murder everybody.

What I don't get is that Godolphin does it with horse racing and it's absolutely fine.
The main man gets to ride in the coach next to the Queen at Ascot - more than legitimate.
Why does this never get called out?
Also, all of the so called 'journalists' who are screaming from the roof tops will be going to Qatar to cover the World Cup.
They go the F1 Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi. They go and cover the golf. If they are so up in arms against it - then why not boycott it?
Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter etc all play in the Saudi Invitation golf tournament for mega bucks. They never
seemed to get called out for it? That's more than fine then?
It seems if it's Football it's 'sportswashing' if its anything else then it's OK?
Hmmmm....

If you literally Google these sports you've brought up with sportswashing next to it, you'll see coverage.

World Cup:

Its currrently valued at £3,74 billion. The total purchase price and all investment has been circa £1 billion
Not a shabby return on investment in 12 years.

Personally think you are way off with the 1billion investment :

Sheikh Mansour put a further £58m into City; his total since 2008 is now £1.3bn

Then theres the 400m every few years for Eithad, New York City cost them 100m alone just to join the league.

Not a chance they turn a profit, now granted the level of investment across the board means that they will defo get a massive chunk back if they sold, but I fail to see how they turn a profit.

Not to mention that even WWE gets scorned for the Saudi deal in some circles (Not the ones that matter sadly)
