Newcastle fans adored Benitez who they rated as possibly their best manager for a decade. They always maintained the real problem was the owner, but whoever followed their managerial icon would be working under even tougher and harsher constraints and to everyone and anyone must therefore look like a man asking to be hung.
Inheriting a squad that had allowed the two strikers who scored two thirds of the teams goals last season – Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez – to leave isn't anyone's idea of heaven and to make things worse all five of the summer signings have seriously underwhelmed so far.
So Bruce, a Geordie and lifelong Newcastle fan allowed his heart to rule his head when all the warning signs had been posted with flashing lights on every corner of his journey up there, a senseless career move when out of work looked infinitely better - he's not exactly short of money.
Most other managerial candidates wouldn't have touched the Newcastle job with a bargepole, Bruce was virtually the only one who would even go near, he let his heart overcome his brain and took on a job on where a huge majority of the fanbase wanted him out before he'd even started. A martyr to his love for his hometown club while perhaps throwing whatever chances he had of a future job in the incinerator
With such a hugely thankless and unmanageable task he's very predictably had no chance. Right from the start he's been thrown under the bus, no real money his only two strikers sold and a desperately poor owner. He finally flipped after yet another truly abject performance.
His reaction to the pitiful surrender at Leicester was furious bordering on manic, he could not have the players in on Monday as he was still seething with anger.
They can do the nice and easy thing and dismiss Bruce, but there'll be no queues of quality managers wanting to have a go or even average ones, it'll cure absolutely nothing at all, except temporarily satisfy those fans who think there's some kind of saviour waiting and desperate to take such a job.
They're kidding themselves, Mourinho? - what a joke that suggestion was.
