I don't understand this hostility against Newcastle United. I remember when we were everyone's second favourite team. It seems that the media has created this weird profile of a supposed Newcastle fan who is a glory hunter and wants instant success.
This is a bizarre idea. Out of all of my friends, and reading all the comments on the internet from Newcastle fans, I can't find a single one who matches this profile.
We just want our team to play good football, beat Sunderland and one day (just ONE DAY) win the Carling Cup. It would be wonderful. I would even trade a place in the Premier League for it. Just to once see the Newcastle captain hold aloft a cup. Well, the thought brings a shiver down the spine.
It's impossible for Toon fans to become glory hunters because we haven't had any glory since the UEFA Cup Final of 1969. Long-suffering maybe. Whingers certainly not. Always optimistic but always realistic, we remember when we almost dropped into Division 3.
And by the way, no-one in Newcastle has ever called Keegan or Shearer a "Messiah". That was invented entirely by the media.
PS - call me old-fashioned but I don't hate any football teams, and I always cheer for the English teams in Europe too.
