Such a sweet striker of a football, also a thorough gentleman. He played in the age when it was not unusual for international footballers to be part of the community in which they lived and played. Derek lived in a corpy house in Dovecot, it was a few houses along from the local primary school. I never once saw Derek refuse to sign an autograph for one of us, or to stop and joke with us in the street, we really pestered Derek looking back on it, he was our local hero. He just never seemed to mind, or if he did, he was too nice a guy to show it.
