I think Big Sam will do well for us. He took over at Bolton when they were Football League also-rans and eventually got them into the top 6 of the Premier League - on a shoestring budget. He also got a crap West Ham side into the top 8. And he kept Sunderland up against the odds 12 months before Moyes relegated them. And Crystal Palace, of course. He's also one of the most forward thinking managers in the country; he was one of the first to utilise sports science to get the best out of players.

All the RS fans on the radio are saying that he'll relegate us, but I don't think he will.

The RS fans can do one. They've always got too much to say about us.

It would be interesting to know if Paulo Fonseca could leave Shakhtar right now as they stand second in City's Champions League qualifying group and need only a point at home to an already guaranteed top spot City on December 6th to make sure they go through to the knockout phase instead of the team setting Italy alight Napoli, who are one of the best in Europe atm just behind the very top echelon of PSG and Manchester City and possibly on a par with Barca and Real

It may be that having a shortlist of three is Moshiri's way of not letting Allardyce dictate everything to him with no comeback.

Apparently Moshiri is coming to the conclusion that if he cant land Silva then Allardyce is the only other manager in world football who can do the job here.

The completely different styles seemingly not an issue.

There may be some repetition in here with a previous post of mine but bear with me as where I mention Silva you could easily substitute the name Fonseca in the part were I talk on the two divergent styles

Yes Silva and Sam are opposites but we are where we are now and Silva is no longer an option, it does seem completely contradictory but Allardyce now of the available options is the one best suited to our plight, I would have confidence in and far preferred Silva and he would have used completely almost polar opposite methods to pull us out.

There are and always were two ways to go either ignore the defence and go all out to attack and win by keeping the ball and scoring more despite always being extremely vulnerable at the back

Or the opposite way of making us hard to beat, of drilling the team to defend properly with a good line kept at the back, not too much space in between the centre backs and often two banks of four with two defensive mids shielding the centre backs.

The first method takes a very innovative and quality practitioner to achieve it and there aren't that many about, Silva in my view is one and could have pulled it off.

The second is a far easier method to fall back on if the team is so poor throughout in that at least it can be organised to get men behind the ball, run and defend properly.

Its a method Allardyce uses of clean sheets first and draws or narrow 1-0s. It usually does take time though to iron out the bad habits and get the basic defending right so players know exactly what they're doing, getting results isnt usually that immediate but invariably will come and the team operating in a way that will eventually keep clean sheets on a regular basis.

Once Silva was in effect unobtainable then there wasn't a choice left, Dyche would have been better but he's attached and may take time we can't afford, Allardyce is left as our best choice now.

Absolutely mad isn't it. Martin O'neill. Several continents of UEFA badge holding coaches and he's on the shortlist

Let’s look at MON’s career, Orly.

As a player he has won both League Title and European Cup medals.

Observed at first hand the methods of one of the best English managers ever and has put them into practice.

As a manager he took Wycombe Wanderers from non league to what is now called League 1 in successive seasons,

He got Leicester promoted from the Championship to the EPL, established then there and won two League Cups in the process.

Went to Scotland and won multiple trophies up there when Rangers were still a force.

He took Celtic to a European final where they were unlucky to lose against Jose’s Porto.

Went to Aston Villa and took then to three top six finishes in a row.

The man has managed in both the CL and the Euro finals.

That, my good man, is a much better CV than Mr. Samuel Allardyce esq. can furnish and no mistake.

I am not championing his case here or saying I want him........just pointing out that if the shortlist boiled down to Sam and MON, the latter sure seems a better prospect in my eyes ;)

With Allardyce it's as much to do with having a big personality who can go in there and take all the pressure off players and onto him as much as organisation on the pitch.

He really is a huckster by trade. Not saying he cant set up a team to fight and gain unlikely points, but his skills are very limted. That's whay he's dispensed with as quickly as he's taken up.

Fear not! We've relented over Silva - problem is we are so tinpot that we could only get him on the morning MegaBus so hopefully he makes it in time before Fat Sam signs on the gravy stained line...

It's funny people saying that we will be a laughing stock if we appoint Big Sam as our manager. We've already been a laughing stock for the past month or so regardless. So the horse has well and truly bolted on that front!I would hope that this is a short term deal until the end of the season. With poor Unsy in way over his head, and with negotiations with Watford hitting a brick wall, we badly need an experienced manager to get us into shape and get us some badly needed wins.So yeah welcome aboard Big Sam!

Agree it's short termism but he wasn't dispensed with at his last two clubs but left of his own accord, once to England and once much to Palace protests to retire or at least take a break and be choosy on his next job.

I'm not his biggest fan so don't get me wrong and agree with the comments on his limited style, he wasn't my first choice by any means either but I do think needs must and he is exactly the right man of those available who could come almost immediately.

I know about Fonseca and have posted already why I suspect he isn't really a runner, as much as I might like that not to be the case, the crucial champions league clash on the 6th December just makes an immediate arrival extremely unlikely anyway and they could easily go further in the competition.

O'Neill is also still under contract and is also possibly making up the numbers.

Moshiri knows in business having a shortlist of one is never a great tactic, and I suspect the other candidates are only too happy to be linked even if not actually in the running

But if Big Sam is the free short term option till the end of the season or eighteen months versus not being able to dislodge Silva. Then its not a comparison between Sam and Silva it's more like Sam and O'Neil or Sam and Fonseca isnt it?Now I admit I am scratching my head about the different style between those two but the long term target probably still is Silva/Simone. We need a figure for the now though to get us safe by the end of the season because we were going down with the Unsworth experiment. But yes it's a total shambles I've never seen anything so utterly useless as this recruitment process
