Because until it is done it is not done, so until you have a signature you have to look for alternatives. It also applies pressure on Emery which is no bad thing, and ultimately Koeman was initially Moshiri's first choice but as I've said many times left the door open for Emery to become the preferred candidate.

Our negotiating position is stronger with two candidates. The position is Emery's to take or leave but he knows that Koeman is once more a contender if for whatever reason he procrastinates.

I'm still of the opinion Emery will take it.

I think you might be omniscient.

Even better seeing the entire media establishment flip their lids if we landed Monchi and Emery. Still find it odd they've not even picked up on any sniff of this story. Maybe they've only got eyes for Mourinho and Guardiola st the moment.

This worries me a bit.

You would think this would be a big deal for the football journos.....in this quiet time between the end of the season and the start of the Euros.

The back pages should be full of speculation about it.

But they ain't.

Why not?

Is this chasing the top guys all a sleight of hand and we are all living in a fantasy world?

We're not clickbait ultimately. Nor do we sell papers.

The Euro's is approaching, Mourinho is daily box office and there's still plenty of teams above us that shift papers regardless of whether or not we're on the managerial hunt.

To my knowledge, I don't remember anything happening outside of us when we got Martinez but we were hourly viewing on Sky.

Edit:Nor do I think any good journo wants to have a go at guessing. Hacks like John Cross will but nobody is actually sauced.

To talk to these managers, don't we need to approach the clubs first? and get there permission, it might be different in Spain but surly that would have been reported and Savilla may or may not have given us permission to speak to Emery.

P.s Thanks Esk you kept me sane the last few weeks

I notice a few hacks in the Liverpool Echo are going on about this director of football/head coach rubbish.I personally think myself that a manager needs to have the final say over everything.Having someone else over you to buy the players will just lead to complications and personality clashes. The manager lives and dies by his results. He needs to have total control over all aspects of the footballing side of the operation.I just think this concept of the director of football/head coach is a load of nonsense and will result in a football club lacking stability.

Do you know what the hold up with Emery may be? Might it be conditional on Monchi?

It seems to me that Koeman has been game playing for a little bit. It looked initially like he was using us to get more out of Southampton however increasingly it looks like he was using them to try and get a better deal out of us. What's probably surprised him is the move for Emery from left field and just how attractive an option we have become.

My gut feeling with Koeman is he is probably playing both us and Southampton off against one another but has probably realised he needed to keep us closer than he has.

I like Koeman a lot but I can't say I have been most enamoured by his conduct over the last week or so. Emery seems to be behaving with a little more decency overall and it does worry me a little how Koeman appears to be playing games a little more.
Exactly my feeling mate. Been in the Koeman camp from the word go, but last week changed to Emery. He'll stay my preferred choice now. Koeman overplayed his hand a little bit imo. The joke's on you for that Ronald.

I put a lot of that down to the sleek and professional way we are running the search and how little information is being leaked. Often the press are picking up on things but seem to be almost identical information to what's put on here but a few days later.

I think the second difficulty is very few people have really understood the impact Moshiri has had. In many ways only having 49.9% of shares has made a lot of them think it's still Bill in charge. I do think that perception will have changed over the summer. Finally the Euro's is on and that is a major draw.

In all honesty none of it worries me. Going about our business quietly has been very effective.

Nah

It's a massive decision for him - one he is going to feel massively more confident about if Monchi comes in as DoF. His time in Russia was a mixed experience and this would be another trip abroad. I'd want him to be absolutely certain.

That being said, Spaniards in a football context have tended to enjoy Merseyside in the last few years, so hopefully he'll settle in well.

Koeman has shown himself to be a bit mercenary by the looks of things, which isn't a disaster for us per se but he may well have wee'd on his chips

I did say "truly wants". If Emery is uncertain and has doubts and wants more to time to think it over then he would be better off doing exactly that.
