Gary Neville didn't exactly do a stand up job as a manager at Valencia* but was good as a pundit. I ended up wanting Martinez out of our club. Now he's out, I've nothing against him. Could be a good pundit for all we know. Thinking about it, MLS might be a good gig for him.
* Oops, neither did Koeman.
There is a long list of so called experts who mouth off as pundits and know-alls but have been poor or mediocre at best as managers, or have never even tried the job.
Over here we Hoops fans suffered the ineptitude of Giles and Dunphy "managing" Shamrock Rovers from 1977 to 1983 during which they fluked one FAI Cup and nothing else. They were replaced by the modest Jim McLaughlin whose record was 1983/4 League Champions, runners up in Cup; 84/5 won the double; 85/6 won the double. In 86/7 he retired and was replaced by Dermot Keely who won the double again with the team that McLaughlin built.
Giles was brutal as manager of Ireland - and bored us all to death without achieving anything.
The same Giles and Dunphy have dominated RTE as soccer pundits for the past 30 years - I suppose they are entertaining - a bit like Statler and Waldorf on the Muppet Show
Look at Ronnie Whelan (Southend); Gary Neville (Valencia); Shearer (replaced after a handful of games at Newcastle by his coach Chris Hughton); Mark Lawrenson (Oxford United and Peterborough); Alan Hansen (never tried and in fact stated he had no interest).
Anyway, my glass is more than half full as regards Koeman, and I really look forward to seeing us move quickly in the transfer market and then actually show some signs of having been coached defensively and offensively when the season starts.
A proper pre-season preparation is also essential and I do not expect to see RK in a studio in France during any of the matches this month!!
