Was bored last night reading redcafe, awful website, such a mess, so hard to follow.

Anyway, I noticed this, which I found interesting and fits in with what I always suspected.

As someone who's worked in the football press, I thought I might offer an insight into how this industry actually works.

In my first job we had a sit-down meeting once where everyone tried to come up with plausible links between players and clubs. It was a case of 'ok, Hulk's looking for a new club and United don't have a partner for Rooney, so we'll link them together.' There was no evidence for any of the links we came up with. I stress that I wasn't working for one of the big boys, but I think it happens all over the place, particularly the tabloids.

Then you've got the cowboy journos. There was one guy, called Ben Fairthorne (I think his stories are banned on the Caf), who used to cut-and-paste bits of existing interviews and pass them off as his own. So his 'exclusive' with, say, Messi would be a patchwork quilt of five or six different interviews Messi had done over the years. I don't know how many such cowboys are currently operating within the football world, but I guess there's quite a few.

Another place I worked simply copied articles from other papers, although I guess this is a bit more transparent as they are obliged to name and link to the source in the story. Loads of titles operate in this way - it's far easier to rip other people's stories than it is to actually do the work on your own. So you get the sort of wildfire spread which has erupted over Mourinho today. One paper claims the exclusive (which could be complete bollocks) then everyone has it.

Occasionally someone actually has an inside source (such as the guy who was leaking lineups at United under Moyes) but these avenues generally get shut down very quickly. All journos have to go on is the mixed zone, where you might get five minutes with a player; the corporate press day, where you're given a player and a list of questions to avoid; and the press conference, where most interesting questions are banned and the heavyweight journos have a pact to share the same the information they receive. One of the journos actually writes up everything that's said in the press conference and sends it to the other journos.

So basically, 90% of what you read is BS. The foreign journos are far more clued-in than the British ones tbh - people like Balague and Di Marzio actually have contacts. I wouldn't read anything into the UK-based reports.

Suppose you don't include The Mirror here mate, with their fair & balanced coverage of all things Everton.

Mate seriously i've been actually wondering for a bit IF their has been any actual contact between Mourinho and United full stop, still yet to see any single credible source with any quote from any party involved, even vaguely connected.

Actually think all these rumpours go back from when their was mutual interest from both a couple of years ago so it's easy page fillers and clickbait to the asian army of united supporters, be amusing like if it was all just pie in the sky from journos though - they want him at United - if theirs any substance to it is debatable though

BTW that bloke is right on a lot of it, but right at the end he mentions Balague as being credible due to contacts he has, Balague from what i have seen was 'sourced' when he first came on the scene but the days of him having any contacts have long since gone all he does these days is play the sure thing and cover himself with all possible outcomes so he appears connected still.

Yeah Balague prolly had some good contacts over the years but screwed it all up with his massive mouth.

Aye like most sourced people the more they give stuff away and more high profile they are then eventually it gets shut right down, for example if @The Esk has contacts (which i believe he does since the takeover) and he started to give x,y, z details can guarantee that within a few weeks/months he would here absolutely nothing of note ever again, but he is smart enough to realise that which is why he has shared some thigns but nothing too specific that can be traced back or can be seen to be blatantly from someone inside the club.

BTW Mourinho to us - first signing Moutinho who shares the same agent - your dream can finally be realised!

And earlier today, the Manchester based Telegraph journo, who has been consistent about this for ages, (nowt doing basically), explained that LVG has already been allowed to change their pre season stuff, (less games or travelling or something), been told he is the one signing players in the summer, and something else as well.

Lets see. 2 big names on the market for sure.

Not really seen anything linking him with going from any journalist who has a decent repiutation for getting things right mate, the best of the MEN journos has been downplaying it as well from the start and torpedoed a few of the 'false' rumours such as a pre contract etc

Cheers for the heads up @DANNOJ, just had £20 at 28/1 for Mourinho's next club to be Everton. Those are ridiculously long odds considering other bookies and the 'extra info' we have in here. I don't particularly think it will ultimately happen but when Betfair open a market on it I'm pretty sure I'll be able to lay some of that off at a much shorter price. Lovely little arb.

I read somewhere that Jose would cost 12m per annum in salary, if so, I think that would be only affordable by a club a lot richer than us.
