The rules aren’t symmetrical for the defense though are they? The o gets a very large advantage - the only thing that would work against them is that they won’t be spending very long on the field and thereby tiring out their own d.

Football is a game of strategy - ask Andy Reid if it isn’t his schemes in large part via creating mismatches that give his teams a huge edge.

It doesn't matter if the offense has an advantage so long as both teams get an equal number of possesions, which (American) football by its nature almost forces. In principle, the offense should always have the advantage, by virtue of initiative in a dead ball game.

Footy is a little different, in that 'fairness' is derived from the fact that the rules are applied in the same way regardless of who has possession. Because it's a continuous game, possession does not necessarily confer advantage. Basketball is much the same; bad turnover -> free points at the other end.

(The generally agreed upon exception to 'fairness' in footy is playing at Old Trafford against a Ferguson side, where they get several extra minutes to find a winner or equalizer when behind or level.)

Symmetry is not about whether or not White has an advantage, so long as both players get an equal opportunity to play from that side of the board. This is why the world championship of chess has an even number of games. Like (American) football, it's effectively a dead ball game with complete information where White has the advantage by virtue of moving first.

Weirdly the in between period was when he was his best as an individual. Which should just serve as another case of how individuals don't really drive winning as much as people make out.
