When Allen convinced Holmgren to come aboard the whole franchise got going. Soon after they tore down the Kingdome and built the Q-West. Back then they were playing in the AFC in a division with KC, Oakland, SD. I happened to live a couple of months in Seattle in 99-2000 when we lost the Wildcard Game against the Dolphins. Ricky Watters at RB.

No doubt. It's what good owners do...they hire good people. The Nordstroms getting Chuck Knox back in the 80's really got the franchise rolling.

I do have to admit that I was totally against the Pete Carroll hire. Thought it would be a bad mistake. I guess that's why idiots like me don't own successful NFL organizations.

Aficionados feel free to fill in the blanks for the last 8

Patriots = Man United
Cowboys = Liverpool
Seahawks =
Falcons =
Steelers = Dortmund
Packers =
Texans = Chelsea
Chiefs =

It's hard to draw comparisons. Easier to class the organizations and let you sort it out.

Cowboys -- prima donna organization top down with some real talent in their history and across the nation the most popular team. Always on TV. Won a few times also. Glass jaw QB replaced with new guy who might actually be the stuff. Placeholding slip by glass jaw QB kills last real playoff hopes. = Kopites (you got that right)

Steelers -- down to earth organization with good owners and leadership up top. 3 coaches (managers) over 40 (?) years. Won 6 times. Play very predictable, smash mouth football. Very likable (if you're not a Browns/Bengals/Ravens/Eagles guy or an envious Kopite). = ? Juve? The team Arsenal wants to be?

Patriots -- laughable franchise for almost their entire history. Cinderella run in 1985 decimated by the Chicago Bears, with signature move the goal line rush by Refrigerator Perry. Hard luck team until they found two important pieces, each of who may be the greatest at their job in NFL history. = United or Chelsea?, but only if football was created in 1992.

Packers, Chiefs -- midwestern/small-market clubs with great history and some of the best support and home atmosphere. Major difference is success: Packers 4, Chiefs 1 title. = Villa, Everton, or Geordies?

Seattle -- the cheese boy described them well. = City?

Texans -- new club with limited success and little offensive talent. No threat in this playoffs, but could be good later with the right organization. = MK Dons organization with Bournemouth aspirations?

Falcons -- terrible club in a bad sports city. = Fulham if they didn't have Craven Cottage.

They have a good D, and Pats will probably take their foot off the throttle later.

24-9

They are a team without its best player and no real consensus QB limping forward out of a horrible division. The Raiders were a dead man walking by the time they arrived. Pats are locked and loaded. Houston moving forward at this point is even less likely than the Jaguars making the playoffs next year.

As for the Jags... The jobs have been filled.

Good to see TC back, but from here it looks like lots of chiefs in the penthouse, with a GM (holdover Caldwell), a DoF (Coughlin) and a head coach (Marrone).

More details as they become available. I'll be interested to see how TC plays with others here.

First things first, sort out the uniform.

Then talent in your 55 man roster.

Then get people to attend the games.

Hire me/sorted.

You think Houston can score? I can't see them scoring more than 13 points. And likely 3 or 6

Yeah. I don't think they'll get shut out but I think it'll be field goals. You're right, if they score more than 13, I'd be shocked. I said bet the over on points because NE is gonna run it up big time.

I'm starting to think that my 34-9 might be a bit low on the 34 for NE. Might have to bump it up to 37. Was thinking 41 but HOU does have a very good D. That said, your D will tire if it's on the field the entire game.

I love this thread.

I can't argue with a lot of this logic. As others have said, the only one that makes no sense is Houston to Chelsea. Houston is practically irrelevant in the grand scheme and isn't necessarily likeable or unlikeable. They're just there. Like the whole AFC South.

The Patriots, however, are more like Chelsea to me the more I think about it. Terrible until Belichick got there (Mourihno). Now they can't stay out of the spotlight. And they're good.

I've struggled a lot with where to put the Steelers, b/c there is an element of Kopite to them and some fans (although I guess that's with pretty much every team), but nothing like the Cowboys. Juve/Arsenal is about right. Could make an argument for Man U. Dortmund isn't a terrible shout either. I see the Packers and Steelers as very similar.

Chiefs - perhaps Sunderland if they were just a little more successful. Rabid fan base. More likable than their rivals.

Falcons are kind of like West Ham to be honest.

I think your Steelers/Juve call is dead on. Ask any Italian expat or #-generation Italian-American who his favorite team is, and you get Juve.

Steelers fans have streamed out of western Pa. and across the world in a similar fashion. The first thing you find out when they show up in your neighborhood is that they are Steelers fans.

Good call on Pats/Chelsea as well. Visualize Steve Grogan wearing his helmet sideways while waiting for the medic to scrape him up from the plastic frozen turf as the pre-Belichick Pats.

Grogan's injuries and his toughness in response to them are also part of his legacy. One sports writer for the main Massachusetts paper, the Boston Globe, wrote of the "Grogan Toughness Meter" in 2003. The writer, Nick Cafardo, gave a partial listing of Grogan's injuries over his 16-year career: "Five knee surgeries; screws in his leg after the tip of his fibula snapped; a cracked fibula that snapped when he tried to practice; two ruptured disks in his neck, which he played with for 1 1/2 seasons; a broken left hand (he simply handed off with his right hand); two separated shoulders on each side; the reattachment of a tendon to his throwing elbow; and three concussions."

Dean Spanos is the devil. No wonder the Chargers underperform. Leaving a city that loves you for one that doesn't care about you in the slightest.

What a mess.

He's not doing his karma any good, is he? It's just shameful is what it is.

Put my bets on for the weekend

Seattle +5 @ Atlanta - really like Seattle ever since the decision to throw in the Superbowl...

Patriots -15 v Houston - Pats look a class above every team, nevermind Houston.

Pittsburgh @ Kansas over 45 - Hope Chiefs wins in a high scoring game. Pittsburgh's offence looks good though

Green Bay +4.5 @ Dallas - as posted earlier in the thread, I've got a feeling Green Bay can go all the way at decent odds. Rodgers is inspired at the moment.

Whatever the results, can't wait for another cracking weekend of games.

Can't really argue with your logic on any of these. But I have a few thoughts:

5 points is a lot to give Seattle, although this Atlanta team can make it to the Super Bowl b/c their offense is that good

I have only one rule in sports betting. And that's never, EVER bet against the Patriots. Ever. No matter how bad they look. And Houston is awful.

Steelers, and Big Ben in particular, are terrible on the road. Night and day to at home. I can see them winning, but might not go over. KC doesn't exactly set the world on fire offensively. I'm looking to a 20-17 type game here

Jordy Nelson is out I think. That could be huge. Although the Pack is hot and Dallas has a rookie QB, Dallas' run game and offensive balance could be the difference. This Dallas team reminds me A LOT of the Steelers team that won Super Bowl XL in Ben's rookie season.
