No. The forward pass was created because the sport was too violent and Harvard had just built a new stadium with walls very close to the edge of the field; the playing field couldn't be widened (in Harvard's case), so new rules were sought to make the game less dangerous. (This fact is burned into my brain thanks to Madden).

So basically, before this, it was Rugby? :o

Hate to get back to the NFL, but...

http://pro32.ap.org/article/ap-newsbreak-source-says-rice-video-sent-nfl

A law enforcement official says he sent a video of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee to an NFL executive three months ago, while league officers have insisted they didn't see the violent images until this week.

The person played The Associated Press a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 confirming the video arrived. A female voice expresses thanks and says: "You're right. It's terrible."

The law enforcement official, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says he had no further communication with any NFL employee and can't confirm anyone watched the video. The person said they were unauthorized to release the video but shared it unsolicited, because they wanted the NFL to have it before deciding on Rice's punishment.

Be glad you are not Roger Goodell. (well, there's that golden parachute)

Cheese on Roger Goodell describes his current situation. The monster must be fed. The worm has turned.

One of the basic rules of life: don't lie

Also, don't be an asshole, but often that's more forgivable.

The irony will be great if Goodell is dismissed and Rice returns to the league in 2015.

how much is on Goodell (the easy target) and how much on the Players Union and willingness to protect their own regardless of crime?

given how people HATE on Rog for coming down like a ton of bricks on prior infractions which "tarnish the shield", i imagine he wanted to.

the players are their own worst enemy. they commit horrible acts off the field, then get all pissy when the league does anything about it.

fwiw the Ravens should have cut his ass long ago without prompting from the league... but then again, they have a statue out front of a guy who was involved, at some level, in a double homicide. funny they are getting good press for hanging on to him this long before acting, you know, when that other video "finally" came out.

Maybe the story doesn't get any worse than it is today, but it looks like it's going to get worse. TMZ is involved, and I don't think they'd waste their time if there wasn't a legitimate story.

Al Davis understood the NFL better than most.

I imagine it will be a lot worse.Just pointing out he's been the quickest to pull the trigger on bad behavior in the past. He's a fave target because how heavyhanded he's been with Bountygate and PED abuse (kinda) issues.

Other forces (Ravens, Union) probably fought behind the scenes to protect Rice's spot.

And they were ALL probably hoping this thing had blown over to be forgotten about.

Cynical me finds it funny that I saw a lot of bile heaped on Roger and a lot of praise for Baltimore for "doing the right thing" MONTHS after the fact and as the new tape broke.

(Pats fan here, happy the day the po po showed up for Hernandez they immediately dumped him. Once it was apparent something happened, even with Gronk hurt, they didn't f around. Ravens should have done so with Rice. And, well, probably Ray Ray as well.)

Union has no power on suspensions, they can make appeals, but only to Goodell who is the guy who hangs down suspensions in the 1st place. They bargained that provision away. They'll probably file a grievance though becasue the NFL screwed this all up.

Goodell is a joke, a 44M/year PR toady who can't even do PR well. This is the 2nd time he's screwed up everything (Vilma suspension, Saints bounty thing) up only this is much worse. I guess he'll have to call Dad (Tagliabue) again to straighten everything out.

I think Rice got only 2 games because it was the summer of criminal owners (Haslam and Irsay) and in his idiot mind it would have looked bad if he came down too hard on Rice all the while working hard to ensure 2 clowns from Indy and Cleveland get off with a slap on the wrist.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement sets standards, and Union goes out of the way to fight suspensions, whether Welker's "Molly" incident or half a dozen Seahawks testing positive for PEDS between 2011 and May 2013. (FFS who knew MLB would evolve into the most stringent in this regard?)

Owners Gone Wild is a different issue, as I'm not sure there is an established code of conduct.

This on toast.
