Unfortunately I think he attitude summed up Everton for most of recent history - the premise that "it's fine if we play well and put up a good show for 30 minutes, at least we tried".

Made a good start, but folded because he couldn't be arsed to play for the full 90 minutes. Failed through lack of application as much as through lack of ability. That attitude ran deep throughout the club for many years.

This was my view too.. he scored his whole career .. came to us and continued. Then being in and around the box wasn’t good enough.. how many strikers under Moyes had to be everywhere so much that they weren’t where they should be when it mattered.

but I read recently he acknowledged he began to take his form a little for granted and wasn’t putting in the effort.. all went south from there.. from the horses mouth. But still.. Moyes and strikers

Turned up to sign at Goodison with his best duffle coat on. Scored a few first time efforts that look like complete hit and hopes in the context of his whole worthless career.

Moyes usually bought well, but FFS he never signed a decent forward other than Yakubu in 11 years.

Seemed a good bloke. Good slotter , but was hampered by a lack of instant acceleration.

He says himself that he stopped putting the work in. Nothing to do with Moyes' coaching at all.

I would imagine that playing the way Moyes had strikers play would be frustrating, and would wear on their motivation. All their life they've been taught to score goals, and here is this manager that is continually asking them to play in a way that puts them out of position to score when the opportunity presents itself.

Now that I think about it, Klopp may be dealing with that at the moment. It's easier to put in the extra effort outside the training ground when it's working, and hard to motivate themselves when it's not paying tangible dividends.

That would tend to explain this observation:
