He's not even turned 30 yet though. And CBs traditionally get better with age. You could argue 30ish is a CB's prime.

We paid £5 million I think for Distin, when he was 31. And he's never even been capped. Admittedly I think Distin is a better player than Yobo, but when we signed him I didn't think so -- he's really had the form of his career since joining us.

I think £4 mil is disgusting for someone of Yobo's ilk.

According to wiki he'll be 31 in September. I like Yobo and I'd actually probably play him ahead of Distin. He's out of Moyes's thoughts though. Yes, he probably is his 'golden age'. Stubbs, Weir, Watson and Gough all did really well for us in their thirties. The trouble is that we'd never have paid serious money for any of them at that stage of their career. It's all about sell on value. We over paid for Distin because we were really short and the season was closing in. Fenerbache could shop around and probably find better value than Yobo for that sort of money. It depends how important his experience is to them and whether he's become a key part of their team already.

Ah. Time flies -- I thought he was still 29!

I can understand why we're getting low offers. We need the money, he wants to leave etc etc. It doesn't change the fact that I think he's worth more, though.

On the whole I agree with you. I suppose value is a subjective thing though. He's only worth what someone's prepared to pay.

First-time poster, but have been following the forums here for a year or so as I'm a huge toffee fan over in the states...

Maybe I just need some cheering up, but I'm really struggling with how I should be excited about the idea of waiting until the tail end of the summer before the season starts to make any moves in the transfer market... Doesn't that put a lot of pressure on the club to more or less scramble to make a move or moves before the season starts as well as give leverage to selling clubs to hike up the price or at least be less than negotiable since they will know we haven't made any moves and our window is rapidly closing for signings before the season starts? I have a hard time believing that saving on Summer wages is the only reason we would make this our 'strategy', as the prospect of saving a month or 2 on some new players' wages seems to me to be a potentially disastrous mistake if we miss out on good players that we are capable of bringing into the club earlier on in the summer, but miss out on because we're trying to save a little bit of money in the short term. Financially and competitively, that just doesn't seem to make very much sense.

For argument's sake, let's choose Joey Barton as an example. If we move for him now we might flag him up to other clubs such as Villa or Stoke. Therefore the price will be higher. If we let them do their business first and then go to Newcastle with a late offer, they might decide to do business on our terms rather than let the transfer window shut and have to wait until January to sell him, where his value will have decreased because he'll be into the final 6 months of his contract.

Of course it's not cut and dried and there are all sorts of variables. I'm sure that Moyes would like to do business early in the window, but he has to choose his moment to pitch in so that we get maximum value.
