But I suspect that's very much part of their plan to continue the Everton model of selling to buy. In that context how convincing were they really prepared to be beyond putting out stories to their lackeys in the media to make it look like top wages and a plan to push on were presented to players and agents which 'they ignored'?

It's all spin; there's no change in that aspect of the club - they spin against their own players when they know they have to move them on. It's been going on for years, the pattern is familiar. How do so many fall for it when it's trundled out again and again?

I have a horrible feeling we'll buy a budget centre forward such as Troy Deeney or Shane Long and there'll be no conclusion of the Sigurdsson deal until one for Barkley has been finalised and McCarthy sold too (with a swap deal for a budget/utility centre-half involved somewhere). Jury is out on Bolasie but Lookman is probably similar to Deulofeu, but hasn't been truly tested yet. Deulofeu will not get a regular run in the Barcelona team as he isn't good enough. He failed at Sevilla, and failed at Everton. That doesn't land you a starting place for one of Europe's best.

Lukaku is an obvious loss and I doubt anyone would argue but he wanted to leave so there was nothing we could do.

Barkley is still here. If he goes, Sigurdsson will most likely come in and has been far more productive than Barkley has in the last 3 seasons.

Well, well, well another day gone... another day closer to our first game... and another day with no sign of any movement on Sigurdsson or the merest hint of a replacement for Lukaku.

Would anyone who believes the current lack of activity is not the direct consequence of Barkely (and McCarthy) not being sold, or that the sale of Lukaku (plus Cleverley, Deulofeu and McGeady), was nothing to do with all the initial incomings, please care to explain their blind indifference to the obvious truth?

We still sell to buy.

And right now, we still have some buying to do.

Just where are the goals going to come from in two days' time and beyond?

Those who still insist that we have money to burn are as deluded as those hailing Rooney's second coming as our long-awaited messiah.
