I don't think we wanted them to stay. Does Koeman seem that arsed that Ross is leaving? Has Stones cemented a place as one of the top centre backs for club and country? Has Delefeuo gone back to Barca on the back of a storming season in Italy? The answer to all of them is no. Maybe none of them suit our style. Maybe they will go elsewhere and become world beaters but they weren't doing it here so why not cash in on them to help rebuild?

Because net spend lad

I think we did and I think we could build a better team with them than without them.

We didn't sell them because they weren't doing it, possibly Deulofeu excluded. We sold them because they wanted to play for someone else and made the decision for us.

Not bad for a wind-up !

You still have a fair bit to go before you can challenge @davek though, now he's a real expert, but I think you have it in you to challenge for the WUMCup ... and @Baines' left foot has been showing a lot of promise recently too. Keep up the good work (y)

Anyway, on topic, until (if ? ) we start to really compete with the big boys for Champions League footie, then the chances are that our best players ( even Ross ) at any one time will see us as a stepping stone to another English club. If we make the step up to CL footie, then our best players will likely leave us to go and earn more money at the likes of Citeh or top European clubs, or anywhere else in the world.

All the people that run the club can do is do whatever it takes to help us bridge the gap to the teams above us. It would help if they didn't make glib statements about "keeping our best players" though, because that's virtually impossible, there'll always be another club somewhere which seems more attractive to players and their agents. That's just how football is these days.

What wind up?

So if I'm reading this correctly you're saying that we couldn't have kept these players before Moshiri came here either. Nothing has changed.

The best players at Everton still see themselves as better than Everton.

Until Moshiri stops our better players walking out on us then nothing will change.

The conclusions you have drawn from this Barkley situation seem to be very 'glass half empty' though. We have to at least be realistic when judging Moshiri. Things clearly have changed under him. We've got ourselves back among the top 7, are moving forward with the new stadium, have brought back a player with the calibre of Rooney and we have a manager who is respected in World Football who is trying to push us on.

Your argument seems to be that Moshiri has failed because he hasn't been able to persuade Barkley, Stones or Lukaku to stay. But as I said, we have to be realistic. Lukaku has said repeatedly that he wants to play CL football. What could Moshiri have done differently to keep him? We tried to make him our highest ever player but he wants to win trophies right now. Did you expect Moshiri to have got us a top 4 finish in his first full season here with the squad that we had available? Because without CL football on offer, Lukaku had always maintained that he wanted to leave.

With Barkley, in hindsight, Moshiri could have stuck with a manager who had pushed us in to decline with successive 11th placed finishes, but put his arm round Barkley's shoulder and made him feel special. And where did that get Barkley in 2015-16? 0 minutes under Roy Hodgson at the Euro's. Moshiri made the tough decision that previously Kenwright wouldn't have by giving Martinez the bullet, and bringing in Koeman. That decision moved us from rotting in 11th to 7th last season with European Football to offer players and resulted in Rooney who has won everything in the game returning and raises our profile even further.

Finally on Stones. Stones wanted to leave in 2015 before Moshiri arrived at the club. He came in around February 2016 whilst Martinez had us rotting in the bottom half and Stones then decided to leave for Champions League Football and a huge salary at Man City. Again, I will ask, how could Moshiri have possibly persuaded Stones to buy in to the 'project' in those circumstances?

It's easy for you to simply say - 'he didn't manage to persuade them' but in the circumstances, i'd like to know what you think Moshiri could have done to change those players minds.

Very possibly but Stones has been poor as has Deulofeu. I don't think they've been that hard to replace. Ross is a good player, for all we know his reasons to leave are not even football related. I'd say we are in a stronger position then we were 18 months ago. I'm sure time will tell
