In that case I think originators of Notts County were being a bit presumptuous, if not greedy, giving the new team from Nottingham the only option of playing in the forest to avoid detection. Those Victorians came down on Johnny-come-latelies quite hard.

Exactly this. Notts is short for Nottinghamshire i.e. the name of the county, hence Notts County.
Nottingham Forest are named after Nottingham the city rather than the county.
(should have called themselves Nottingham City to prevent confusion)

I'd be happy with all of those changes. Something's got to give, as the current XI isn't capable of scoring a goal from open play.
