It's what the caption stated thought it was too early for Whittle- sorry to hear about Newton , but he never impressed me as a player too old when we finally got him , and very slow on the turn

I bumped into him with my older brother he had been dropped we were walking along Goodison road - we had played awful he had been dropped we had our blue scarves on - he just blurted out that was a load of rubbish that performance - went off him after that!lolYes he never showed his best for us but don't think it was his age as he was only about 27/28 when he signed for us. It's possible he suffered a World Cup hangover after Mexico 70 like some other players did, including Bally. Don't think they fully understood the effects of high altitude in those days. He also had a disagreement with Catterick about playing style: Newton favoured passing the ball from the back but Catterick felt it led to him being caught in possession (he was) or giving the ball away, and wanted him to hit long balls up to Big Joe. He went on to rediscover his best form at Burnley, including some excellent displays against us.
A sad day in our History - Bally doesn't look that happy either!!!!
