Old Everton Pictures

I'm sorry gentlemen, but I have to dissagree with you concerning Kay, Layne & Swan etc. The FA had to stamp on this stuff & ban for life straight away,
I think the FA were right as it seems to have been nipped in the bud. I can only assume the Bruce Grobbelaar 'Brown Envelope' scam was overlooked
because the RS were involved. The Paolo Rossi affair was FIFAs fault and is about right for a bent organisation.
It's rife today players betting on games getting modest bans etc ......

Joey did you see Kay play? My old fella says he was the dogs danglies...would love to have seen him.
No just missed him in 1963/64 I went to selected games as I sat on the barrier with my late father, and older brother they raved about him as being the best wing half going - just ready to see him, and he was banned - he was an England international marked Pele in a friendly game to great plaudits from the press - who sadly contributed in his downfall!
Labby reckons Bally would have loved his style of play, but we got HK instead the rest is history.....

Joey, I know that it's rife today players betting on games. That is not why Tony Kay was banned for life. Kay, Swan & Layne all playing for Sheffield
Wednesday at the time against Ipswich Town a 1st Division game decided to throw the game by playing badly in some way and also having a bet
on the game as well. Jimmy Gould an ex-Everton player instigated 'the sting' by enlisting Kay, Swan & Layne to do the dirty deed. It seems that
Ipswich scored early on anyway and went on to win 2 nil, but it doesn't alter the fact that the Sheffield 3 were on the pitch and ready to do what
was intended. Every sport has this in it. Boxing has always been 'bent' with guys taking a 'dive'. Horse-racing when the jockey 'pulls' the horse.
Crickets Hansie Cronje, Athletics, Baseball & Snooker all fall-foul. I saw Tony Kay play for Everton almost every game, he was worth
mentioning with Mackay, Bremner & Robson, he had everything and more and was hard as nails. If he had played further than his 27 years
maybe he would have been better than Kendal & Harvey. When we talk about Tony Kay being a great footballer, we must always remember to
call him a fool.

It was foolish the same paper gave him 9 out of 10 for his performance that day - it was the punishment that was incorrect a lifetime ban from any football - what would he have got into today's era?
The players get paid that much now they can enlist a top barrister like Sturbridge will do in the future - Barton the money he was throwing around on bets got a minimal sentence and indeed is back in football even Matt Letissier claimed he knew players got paid for kicking the ball out for the first throwing .....
All went unpunished yet once on MOTD a puzzled comentatator when you could play the ball forwards from kick off - it showed a player send an impossible ball out to the touchline like a rugby player kicking in to touch!
This was televised nothing done just a debate!
